Internext - Business Opportunity or One Big Party?

Received this in my inbox today, what do you guys think.....

Article from hahahahahahaha Newsletter

Internext - Business Opportunity or One Big Party?
I have a good business friend who's been looking forward to attending the January Internext in Vegas. I've been gushing about how the conventions are a great opportunity to network, make some business deals, learn some new things and have some fun.
Then the stories from Internext Florida come out, and album after album of public sexual activity, vandalism, drug use and even urinating on a multi-million-dollar yacht were being posted on the various industry boards.

My friend's mood quickly went from anticipation to dread - why should he bother spending the money for a transcontinental flight only to watch adults act like high-schoolers who got into Daddy's liquor? As he put it, "I can see people break things, piss on walls, and get falling-down drunk at home. Why pay to come there and do it?"

The events at this Internext were no less daring and even stupid than past conventions - but the difference is that along the way, someone forgot that this type of debauchery is best left behind closed doors. Just because we're pornographers and we're thought to be perverted, irresponsible scumbags doesn't mean we have to go out into the world and prove those naysayers right.

Last year's Internext in Florida was well-received, and even got good press from a local reporter who attended some of the events. He was impressed at the overall business atomosphere of the convention, and the surprising (to him) lack of public orgies and immature behavior. I wonder if the press will be so kind this year?

The Westin-Diplomat is a high-class hotel that hosts many international diplomats (hence its name) and normally caters to big spenders who know how... or at least where... to keep their pants on. Against heavy local public outcry, they accepted our convention with one simple rule - no public nudity. With no less than 998 rooms and suites, you wouldn't think this would be a problem. After all, we're all adults, right? Even more than that, we're businessmen and women looking to present ourselves professionally.

Apparently though, following that simple rule and acting professional in public is just too hard for some people to manage. Photograph after photograph of couples and threesomes in the hot tub, nude women performing sexual acts on the beach, and breasts on display at every turn prove this. At one party, held aboard an extremely expensive yacht, a few well-known webmasters thought it would be fun to urinate in cups, beer bottles, and even the floors and walls in front of everyone present. This was followed by acting as if they were drinking their own urine. The glorious 60-foot glass atrium in the Westin is the only one of its kind in the Southeast, yet some webmasters thought it would be funny to throw beer bottles at it until they succeeded in breaking it. Never mind that anyone underneath that glass could have been hurt or even killed, or that the heavy rainstorm coming in through the now shattered ceiling would make the marble floors below a deathtrap waiting to happen.

The actions of some webmasters at this event were not only unprofessional, they were childish and disgusting. The tales of this debauchery completely outshined any positive news coming out of the convention and left many webmasters - such as my friend - wondering... why bother? Is this what Internext is really all about?
Even industry Veterans such as Mike AI and Brad Shaw were taken aback by the activities, and had no qualms voicing their opinions on the matter. Sadly, though, their posts were met with an apathetic and even defensive attitude. After all, we're pornographers. We're supposed to be and act trashy. What right do these veterans have "moralising" over what went on?

The point is, the industry has enough of a stigmatism wrapped around it and negative press to last the next 200 years. With the current Attorney General vowing to "crack down" on the adult industry, Visa looking for any reason to stop doing business with us, and processors dropping like flies, this is the time that we should be putting our best foot forward and acting like professionals. After all, you are running a business, are you not?

There is a time for business and a time for partying. However, even while you're at a party, you are still representing your business. Having a good time and being the life of the party is one thing - getting falling-down drunk or disgusting your potential business partners is another. What you do and say can and will affect your business.

I think AcidMaX said it perfectly: "You could be the best businessman in the world, but if I saw you drinking urine during a public function I would never do business with you."

Run your business as a business - or you may find that you don't have a business to run anymore.

On a more positive note, this type of behavior is not what Internext is all about. The roundtables at this event are rumored to be the most heavily-attended, with plenty of webmasters taking the time to pick the brains of industry leaders such as Aly from Python (Grumpy Old Bastards roundtable), Benjamin from SexMoney (traffic roundtable), and Chris from Epoch (billing roundtable). These discussions are the prime opportunity to find out where the industry is headed and how you can prepare for it, as well as having open discussion with the best in the biz.

ARS and AdultPayMaster also joined in, treating webmasters to a fun Lounge Lizard 2 party in the Satine restaurant. Epoch also held a fantastic opening night dinner, and the Spread4U suite was open every night to kick back, relax, and have a few drinks while powering up for the next day. Lightspeed Cash gave new meaning to "good clean fun" with their speedboat rides on the open water. Leading Edge Cash gave new meaning to the term 'guerilla marketing', enticing webmasters to have a Polaroid photo taken with a throng of beautiful - but fully clothed - women. The point being - if you want to enjoy Internext without the high-school antics or public sexual acts and simply hang out with good friends and good conversation, there are plenty of after-hours events that will let you do just that.

All in all, the industry conventions are hands-down the place to be if you want to open avenues for your business and meet up with old friends (even those you've never met in person), as well as providing a much-needed break from the routine. With Internext, AVN provides a setting for some of the most spectacular happenings in the business. Don't let the stories of a few overaged children cause you to shy away from attending - those are the exceptions, not the rule.

And in all likelihood, the people who treat these conventions in such a way won't be around next time to ruin it for those around them. Let's face it - if they'll make decisions like this concerning the way they carry themselves personally, most likely the decisions they make concerning their business activities aren't much better.

Cheers everyone, and we'll see you January 5th-7th in Vegas!

Basically that internext is a time for networking and expanding your business partners, not for acting childish and a' fool... and that webmasters need to act more profesional and less like children at the events

stevecore 08-10-2003 07:55 PM

let's see the pics of webmasters drinking urine!! c'mon, someone's gotta have em! oh wait... nobody DRANK urine!

SykkBoy 08-10-2003 07:58 PM

This article was written by someone who wasn't even at the show....

Amputate Your Head 08-10-2003 07:59 PM

Internext, for many, while a clear business expanding opportunity, is also a place and time of RELEASE. A time to get togther with friends and associates in the industry and have some fun. It is not a Microsoft board of directors meeting. If you go to Internext expecting a formal meeting in your suit, you will probably be disappointed.

My advice: Pull that huge fucking stick from your anus for a few days and relax. If you can't do business in a relaxed atmosphere.... I personally wouldn't want to do business with you at all. Uptight anal retentive mutherfuckers like you can feel free to lick the underside of my ballsack.

Fuck you, AND your high horse.

candidpublishinginc 08-10-2003 08:00 PM

Anyone who tries to vandalize shit or urinates on the floor as a joke should not be in the business.

This is a BUSINESS not a frat party. People who do the above shit are amateurs and not serious people.

Did this sort of behavior occur from the big pros or where these isolated webmaster cases?

StacyCat 08-10-2003 08:02 PM

Since my reply on that other board is buried on the 3rd page, I'll make the point again here.

Do we really expect anything more from Kayla and Easton? Would you really do business with either of them if you met them in a suit? :-)

secondary point, there are things going on at all conventions like this, not just porn conventions. Hell, working at a convention hotel, the worst events that we have (more of less on the same level as the westin one) are the tactical police officers, and the church youth groups.

If by "release and relaxation" you mean doing all of that childish shit, than do your high school frat party shit on your own time.

AYH, for a guy that can't afford to make it off the island, why are you even commenting behavior at a show?

Should we start a paypal donation account so you can make it to Vegas?

I agree 100%. If you in Vegas, make sure we meet. Sounds like you are one of the few people left in this biz with some sense.

Which webmasters were doing this sort of thing? Was it the 'beer money' type or people who actually make a living at this?

I don't think you can forget the 'Jerry Spring' mentality that a good portion of the US population; to these people, having manners is an inconvenience..

J-Reel 08-10-2003 08:33 PM

It's a great place to meet people and conduct business.

It's also a great place to party.

You get out of it what you put into it.

I think the behaviour of a few people has been blown way out of proportion.Sure people did questionable things, other than the window smashing ,which was totally fucking ignorant.but what people do when they are under the influence is their business, unless it harms you personally, let it be,and let it go for fuck sakes. Its just like a new years party at someones house. We all do stupid things we regret.:glugglug

I was standing there talking to MikeAI and a few other people when someone opened the door and there it was. A chick pissing on the carpet then a guy followed up by pissing on the wall. We left right after that. I thought it was a pretty low class act and one I would have rather not witnessed.

so, one incident of the thousands in attendance and that was the second coming of Sodom and Gommorah?

KRL 08-10-2003 08:44 PM

Alcohol and drugs make people do stupid things they normally wouldn't do when sober.

The core problem with the show is you got too much booze flowing day and night. I saw people standing around in stupors that looked like they just came out of a frat party.

What really needs to be done is to have a business get together in an environment where there is no liquor or drugs around. That'll solve 99% of the problems.

I still can't fathom people were pissing all over the yacht. God damn, I'd throw someone overboard right into the fucking water if they were pissing on mine.

Problem at the shows is drugs, not liquor IMHO.

One is legal to posses, another you can spend life in prison if you posses enough coke.

Sykk, this is Ulfie btw. Can't use that name here though. Long story. People pissing on the carpet and walls of a million dollar yacht is not acceptable behaviour. I guess I'm just nuts but I wouldn't come to your house and piss on your rug. Maybe some people find that "cool" but I don't.

MicroChick 08-10-2003 08:54 PM

Carrie, go suck a turd! You weren't at this year's Internext. You were there last summer sitting in a Net-Pond booth giving out banners and your cheap advice. You are using hearsay and some pictures to write your dumb uneducated article.

Shove it girly, up your know nothing butt. You sound like Amputate...both of you are backside drivers.

You have done nothing since the first day you turned to porn but give out your god damn advice. You are Net-Pond's kissassbitch. You have no credibility. Bye Bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:Buck:

1. I wouldn't hold a convention at my home.
2. Not only have I never pissed on anything at a convention, I didn't even go to the Miami show.

No, but that one incident doesn't mean the whole industry is going to collapse. I used to have to babysit bands and they did much worse than piss on the walls and this was in high end hotel rooms.

I'm not excusing the behavior, but it's not like this has never happened at any other party.

I was at a chef's convention where one of Emeril's guys did some unspeakable acts but it doesn't mean I will stop going to Em's restaurant ;-)

This has nothing to do with morality. Apparantly you don't understand the definition of morality

This has everything to do with maturity and how to behave properly in a business convention.

If you want to party and act like an idiot be my guest, but don't do it at the expense of others.

Well, I don't think it will collapse the industry either. I really didn't need to view it though. If you want to do that crap get a room. We just happened to be standing where it happened and I really didn't want to see it which is why I left at that point. Of course, that's what free will is all about.

TDF 08-10-2003 09:47 PM

i just want to know whats different from this years conference and any of the past years? the times I have gone doesnt seem any different

MicroChick 08-10-2003 09:59 PM

Do you really believe that porn is the only industry that pees in cups, fucks unprotected in the open, and throws objects through windows?

The insurance people, lawyers, bankers, rock stars, actors, and every group that assembles in Las Vegas has acted like idiots. Sure, it would be nice if nobody caused a scene, but that isn't REAL LIFE. If you are at an event and you don't like what is happening, leave! When you have a chance, tell the promoters you didn't like the party. If you do work with the offending group of webmasters, then stop.

BUT DON'T FUCKING PREACH TO ME!

If you are Carrie from Net-pond, and you haven't done shit in this business, then SHUT THE FUCK UP!

4Pics 08-10-2003 10:12 PM

It's pretty funny you talk about what goes on at parties. You act like at the show floor or during a round table meeting someone got up walked to the mic and took a piss.

BFD, people dont act like themselves at the parties, well dont goto the parties then? They are a time to blow of steam.
I've met more people at the parties then I did at any round table and learned alot more information sharing a beer then I ever would elsewhere.

Like someone else said, you get out of the conventions what you want to!

Was this behavior at the convention on the floor or at a private party?

I still do't see the big uproar.
Sure, pissing on someone else's wall is unpleasant and probably not much fun for the staff to cleanup, but I'm sure they've had to clean up much worse. That's why there are hefty cleaning deposits.

Its not from their success...
