This is Cyberpimp's thread from earlier today, saying that someone was messing with host files and redirecting surfers:

I looked at the site that was at the ip address in the thread, for about 5 secs just to see what was there. I didn't even think about it because I *thought* my host file was locked and I usually never have any trouble or get popped. Anyway, I was trying to submit some stuff a few minutes ago and I couldn't get to any of the sites, and then I realized the little asshole must have gotten me, too. :321GFY I checked my host file, and sure enough, he'd changed it. This prick is redirecting half the porn world. :1orglaugh

It kept sending me to some German dialer here (warning):

Can someone explain exactly how this redirection works. Is it when you try to access one of the sites that is in the folder...via your browser...you are redirected to a different site? If that is the case what can one do to protect himself from this happening?

I have a bad cold today so I don't even feel like going down this road with you, but if it helps you to know- yes, my WU is set to run automatically and does, I run AV software constantly as well as a separate firewall, my AV does a full system scan once a week, I also run Ad-aware and Spybot at least once weekly, and I have my browser security settings as high as I can tolerate them without them nagging me to death. And as I said before, because of a program I was using, I thought my hosts file was locked and couldn't be fooled with, but yes- I was wrong. Sorry to be such a disappointment to you. But the point of the whole thing isn't that I was crushed over the 28 seconds it took to open my windows folder and delete the file, or that I couldn't get some good quality porn yesterday, it's that he's still a cocksucker, either way, and a lot of surfers won't know what's happened or how to fix it. The hosts file is basically a local version of a DNS server for each individual computer. For example, if you enter a kinghost.com address in the browser, the browser first has to translate the text URL into an IP address. First it goes to the hosts file and looks to see if the URL is in there. IF it is there, thats the IP it uses instead of the REAL IP for the site. If its not there, it goes to the DNS server in you TCP/IP configuration and uses that for the translation.

That said, the only way to fix it is to delete or modify the HOSTS file. Prevention... who knows? I just have everything locked down and I make sure I never run any untrusted executables or scripts.:2 cents:
