New Warnings About Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft
http://www.startribune.com/stories/1556/4028931.html
Warnings by drug regulators about the safety of Paxil, one of the world's most widely prescribed anti-depressants, are reopening seemingly settled questions about a whole class of drugs that also includes Prozac and Zoloft. |

Kinda old news. I can see why starting on Paxil might be associated with suicide risk though. It doesn't make you depressed.. quite the opposite. It can make you feel a bit manic and twitchy for the first few days, and you can get mild tremors, sweats and cottonmouth too. Its uncomfortable, especially if you get started out on a high dose.
I see how the side effects might push someone already teetering on the edge of suicide or violence over it, but saying those things "caused" the suicide is a little ridiculous. Like when a guy who's been sitting on his ass gobbling sausage for 50 years tries to jog and has a heart attack. Some nitwit will always blame the exercise. |
The reason i said good think im not under 18 is due to the fact that that article specifies children and teenagers as being at risk.
All anti-depressents can actualy increase sucide percentage if they are mishandled. Its kinda like asprin can cause headache's... |

When on anti-depressants there is a dangerous time where you are coming out of one of those deep dark depressions, a sort of grey scale area that you are still depressed but now have the energy and "strength" to actually go through it. No I'm not a doctor, but I am a survivor of suicide *mother*, brothers are both bi-polar and have schizo-effective disorder, I myself have panic anxiety disorder. |
"Teenagers and children account for about 5 percent of SSRI prescriptions"
wtf?! hook em young? |
Eros: I agree...
404: Over Medication is a serious problem and I totaly agree. But for some it may be better than the life they lead now, and its just so damn difficult to actualy establish that. |
bah... stupid. It doesn't cause suicides... it just doesn't stop the suicides. There's a difference.
People also believe there's more suicides at x-mas time too... they think there's more depression then. There's not. There's just as many suicides around the holidays as any other time of the year. If Paxil is like a placebo, then it does nothing... not encourage or discourage suicide. It just doesn't stop it. |
you can get all those plus vicodin, naros, xanax and more at www.secretpills.com !

It's true that there's less suicides during the holidays but there is more depression. With the winter months, the pressure of holidays depression increases. People get into deeper funks and once again just do not have the strength to harm themselves. As spring rolls around, there's more sunshine, they have a bit more energy but are still dangerously depressed, and then they kill themselves. My mother took her own life on March 1st of this year. There were of course extenuating circumstances, but she also suffered from bi-polar for many years and this did play in her bad judgement. |
there's always been a concern about anti-depressants and initial suicide. This is because the anti-depressant will often lift energy levels before it lifts mood (mood effects usually 3-4 weeks, supposedly faster with paxil). So a person may still have very low mood but has the energy to act.. i.e commit suicide.
The depressed patient who starts taking anti-depressants and all of a sudden claims to be cured! is one of the biggest reg flags in psychiatry. This person is happy because they've decided to kill themself, and their problems therefore solved. edit: oh eros already said this :).. maybe i'll read the whole thread next time :) |
as i was reading i just got a prozac pop-up wtf ?
lol |
i don't like these kinds of 'mood alterting' drugs. too often the alter ones personality as well. the pharmaceutical companies have really been cashing in lately with all these new drugs that have so many side effects. i always see commercials where they don't tell you dick besides the color of the pill, seems pretty fucked that they suggest to find out about a pill, that they have no idea what it does. this one commercial says their pill doesn't usually cause any more side effects than 'sugar pill'....uh i never realized sugar had side effects... most of these drugs are too new to know any kind of long term effects. too many ppl stuck in the quick fix, instant coffee, one hour dry cleaning society. as they say, rome wasn't built in a day.
