Howard Stern

I have been listening to The Howard Stern show for about 7 years. I can't think back on anything that he ever said that offended me. I find it interesting, clever, and great backround audio while working.

Curious on what GFY thinks...

BRISK 08-03-2003 11:22 AM

I met him a few years ago. He's really tall (like 6' 6" or something) and he's really ugly and he had a blonde chick with him.

SykkBoy 08-03-2003 11:26 AM

I like Stern but he just seems stale to me these days. Maybe I'm just too old or something. I still think he's funny and listen as often as I can, it just doesn't seem as "fresh" as it once did.

It's hard to continually be more and more shocking all the time.

Seems anytime I pass by his show on TV I see either that retarded midget or pornstars OR pornstars with the retarded midgets.

is he on in vegas? I dont listen to radio or watch tv or go to movies anymore.... too much advertising for too little content. I'd give it a whirl if he was on in vegas, but I seem to remember 2 years ago (when I had the worst job of my life) I listened to him but he had like 15 minute commercial breaks... that drove me bonkers.

wargames 08-03-2003 11:30 AM

hes cool

FATPad 08-03-2003 11:32 AM

Few reasons for him getting stale.

A) He's been doing this for 20 years.
B) It's hard to be continually shocking.
C) He has nothing left to prove.
D) I get the feeling he's just riding out his contract now.

But I still listen.

yeah, he's on 107.5 in the morning. Live at 3am, then reperated on tape at 6am. He also has a show on the E! channel

Mutt 08-03-2003 11:55 AM

i'm the biggest Stern fan around, i can make a good case for him being the most influential entertertainer of the past 25 years but I am listening far less these days, only caught a couple hours last week - i still love it but it's not the same show these days. One reason the show seems less fresh than 10 years ago is that what Howard does is done everywhere now, on radio and TV - so the freshness factor is gone, he pushed the envelope as far as it could go and inspired a generation of knuckleheads to do his act. His descent into middle age and his divorce changed him and the show. Losing Jackie the Jokeman hurt - not because Jackie was such a great comedy writer but because 5 main on air personalities were like a family and Jackie was the lightning rod.

For all Howard's fame for creating 'shock radio' his greatest gift is his ability to do an unscripted monologue - that's the way the show started every morning at 6, an hour of Howard riffing on his life and family. For many Stern fans the show was more about identifying with a regular frustrated married guy who was much like themselves, but had a microphone to air out his thoughts and frustrations. Now that Howard is rich, divorced and dating a hot bimbo many fans are disillusioned.

Check out alt.fan.howard-stern , it's downright nasty in there, still one of the busiest newsgroups on USENET but it's 90% Stern fans who have turned on him.

He says the contract he last signed would be his last, so that gives him 2 more years and he's gone. Despite decent success for his bio movie, Hollywood isnt interested him anymore. He has two movies being shot, both remakes, Rock n Roll High School and Porky's plus a new animated show based on his tortured adolescence. If the movies don't do big business, he won't be leaving radio, no way will he just walk away from 20 million a year.

KRL 08-03-2003 11:59 AM

I still listen in occasionally, but its gotten kind of old now after all these years.

He's getting paid $20 million a year for radio? Sounds a bit high.

Mutt 08-03-2003 12:16 PM

20 million a year is the right number - plus other income. If u calculated the amount of money he's generated over the years for Infinity he's been a huge bargain. People don't understand the enormity of his success in morning radio, morning drive time radio in any city is worth millions, in LA and NYC we're talking probably close to a billion. Until Stern did it syndicated radio was just something used by stations to fill in programming late nights and weekends. The belief was that in morning and afternoon drive listeners would only listen to local talent. Howard went on in Philadelphia and went to #1, he was #1 in L.A. for years(has slipped alot), Boston, Vegas, Cleveland, Orlando, San Francisco and practically any market that would pay the huge licensing fee for his show.

His ratings at the peak of his career in the early 90's in New York City are epic, they will never be repeated and nobody will even come close. The world's richest media market and he dominated it as much as any entertainer has dominated anything.

MissEve 08-03-2003 12:18 PM

I cant get the radio show here in AK but I usually watch the E show. How does everyone feel about Artie? I love him for some reason.

I loved the show a couple weeks ago when they had anonymous voting about who was liked and who should lose their job etc, lol :)

MetaMan 08-03-2003 12:21 PM

i saw this one howard stern show where a guys fetish was for girls to puke on him, the hired hoes wouldnt even do it for moola,

eventually they payed a guy to put on a wig and puke on him,

:1orglaugh
and
:throwup :throwup :throwup

Mutt 08-03-2003 12:30 PM

hey MissEve :)

i like Artie alot - but a ton of fans hate him. Maybe it's jealousy cuz Artie is basically a Stern fan who got to live his dream and become a member of the show, he grew up in Jersey a huge fan of the show.

And the stuff between the people on the show is always great.

6'5 Still ugly as sin, and the babe is his supermodel girlfriend Beth O. (shows you what a power and money buys)
He earned it. He worked his ass off for it. Try talking 5 hours a day and make it interesting.

Artie is OK, but I miss Jackie

Houdini 08-03-2003 01:00 PM

Can you listen to him anywhere online? Lately, I've been getting static in my house for 97.1 (SoCal station), half the time I just turn it off because I can't deal with it.

Mutt 08-03-2003 01:17 PM

nope, used to be places you could listen online to Howard but CBS closed them all down. I had a private feed for a year, had to buy a RealAudio server and pay a dude from Florida to pipe me the show. Now that is a hardcore dedicated fan :glugglug

i miss Jackie too, mostly cuz the tension between him and Howard, him and Robin, him and everybody was always good for a few on air fights a week. And the best was the news part of the show, Robin would read her news stories, and for a solid hour Fred and Howard would do their Jackie impressions - usually had me in tears. That and no matter how sad a tragedy Fred would play the sound of Jackie laughing his ass off. 'Sad news today, Ryan White the 12 year old little boy who inspired the country with his courage died from AIDS ............. [ JACKIE's over the top laughter]

Howard has also mellowed with age. He doesn't go into his rants with half as much venom these days, no wishing cancer on people, their kids turn into heroin junky whores, no phonecalls to Delta Airlines asking them how much of a discount he could get on a plane ticket from Dulles Airport to the George Washington bridge right after a plane had crashed into the bridge killing 35 people.......no more phonecalls to his mom......

Alt.binaries.howard-stern

MUTT...you made my day with your feedback.

beemk 08-03-2003 02:15 PM

he tries to offend people, thats why he gets good ratings. if he talked about non offensive stuff he wouldnt have a job.

booker 08-03-2003 02:19 PM

I dig Howard, at least once every 30 minutes of listening to his show I crack up.

And no, he doesn't have to always be offensive, he says a lot of things that aren't offensive and are still funny. He's very clever and has made something from nothing.. and marketed it. Perhaps there are some webmasters who could take a lesson or two from his success.

gleem 08-03-2003 02:23 PM

I saw him in Vegas, ugly motherfucker for sure, but he's fucking hilarious.

I can't beleived he stayed married for so long with all those hot chicks getting naked for him in the studio..

Anyone know who's he dating now?

Mutt 08-03-2003 02:46 PM

If u go back this far with Howard you are OLD! This is from WNBC - in the movie Private Parts u saw how even though they hired Howard from away from a Washington station where he was doing the shock jock stuff the suits at NBC tried to make into him a regular dorky DJ and forced him to do lame stuff like this W - ENNNNNNNNNNNNNNN - B C promo.
