It's also a dead language, how about mentioning PHP which is what most of us program in now. Maybe back in 1998 we used perl scripts but I dont use a single one anymore.

I copied my original post in it's entirety. It's funny. Have a good laugh, I know I did when I re-read it.

By the way, my full time partner is a programmer so perl, php, asp, whatever I already have it taken care of.

You would think so but the sad and scary truth is that many old companies are still running systems which run programs written in these languages. We're talking huge corporations including financial establishments, railroad companies etc.

Are you aware that casinos here in vegas still run DOS? Thats right.... it would "cost" them so much money for the time taking their systems offline to upgrade that they have refused to do it for years and years. They just patch and patch and patch their old DOS systems to keep them running.

PHP is great for doing webpages, but perl is infinitely more versitile.

I also bet the dos programs arent as clumpy as the big nonelegant programs built in Visual Basic. Things in dos, were pretty fast considering the hardware it was running on. My leading edge word processor rocked. I miss it actually lol.

i doubt they run dos, probably AS400 or something.

Perl has a million features PHP doesn't.

Perl and php both have their upsides and downsides.
Neither have yet been fully exploited - So both are very much 'live' computer tools - Likewise with C+++ , webmasters are finding more uses every day -

Heh. PHP isn't for newbies, it's just for folks who have smarter ways to spend their time than backwhacking everything so it doesn't throw an error. ;)

It's very simple. Anyone who says that one programming language is inferior or superior to another, especially mixing and matching with phrases such as "is for newbies" and "is a dead language" is not a true programmer. EVERY language has its high and low points, and every programmer is different. Just because some of you get eye strain from looking at Perl (I know I do sometimes) does not mean you have to downgrade a language that is extremely powerful just because you don't like it. I personally like PHP over Perl for web development, but Perl definately has its uses, and even ASP.Net has had it's uses.

The first thing a real programmer must learn is that programming languages are a method of expressing and executing logical thoughts through a physical syntax capable of being understood by a machine. There are some languages that have more capabilities than others, and some languages are much nicer on the eyes than others, but what it really comes down to is personal opinion. All programmers (at least the ones that truly think logically... you can tell because we are usually eccentric and "different") do the exact same thing when they sit down at a computer. The only difference is the way they tell the computer what to do.

So, my point here is don't bash languages or people that choose to use languages you dislike because it makes you out to look like a complete moron. Reminds me of a script kiddie.

Actually, the idea of mixing php and perl sounds good. And...perl is a little nutty when you realize you don't understand that script you just wrote five minutes ago...

I have a buddy that was working with a company that was attempting to compete with eBay... they started with all Windows machines, so they went with mostly Microsoft products, such as IIS, ASP, SQL Server, and VB. Then, they slowly started moving towards Linux systems, and ended up with half and half. So, in addition to all of the old code being written using the above, they also have Perl, PHP, Python, and Ruby scripts as well as a MySQL database on one of the machines... believe it or not, they are intertwining all of this stuff together, and it is the biggest mess you'll ever see in your entire life.

So, I must say that while mixing languages together is an interesting idea (I've come across a very unique and useful implementation of PHP and Perl together before, actually, but don't remember where I saw it), I wouldn't recommend it. Hehe.

And yes, literally, it takes about five minutes for you to forget the meaning of some Perl code. It's one of life's little mysteries. :thumbsup
