They come from a line of bomb and attack dogs, I was watching them sniff out stuff in training, it was wild. A few of them have titanium teeth.. wicked looking when they are attacking the trainer. The line is European, They are constantly shipping in dogs to breed with. My dog is 18 months and she is around 60 pounds.

They do the tails and claws a day or two after they are born, but the ears are not done until 8 weeks or so. I HATED taking care of her ears. My other dobbie didnt have his ears done. My sister-in-law is only cropping the ears if the owner wants it done.

If your not going to show or train these dogs to police / bomb it is ridiculous to crop their ears. Tails and dewclaws are moot point, every show / working class breeder will do this at birth. Not saying I agree with the practice, that?s just the way it goes.

Ear cropping, tail docking and dewclaw removal originated as means to prevent injuries. Hundreds of years ago dog owners removed those parts of puppies' ears and tails that were likely to be snagged or torn while hunting and working. Dewclaws (rudimentary 5th toes on the inside of dog's ankles) were removed for the same reason. Dogs that were bred for fighting or guarding had their ears and tails removed to prevent loose appendages from becoming convenient grips for their opponent's teeth.

Today, the practice of altering tails and ears is primarily a matter of continuing a tradition rather than fulfilling a need. Considered cosmetic surgery, these operations are elective and should only be performed after careful consideration.

I don't support intervention to destroy any native species. The fact that Kangaroos are culled to protect European style farming (a practice very damaging to our natural environment) in Australia is a national travesty.

I can understand how you might feel it's cruel to do these things to a dog.... after all, the dog is born with this stuff, so it seems only right that fucking with it is wrong....

but it's far more humane to have these procedures done. It saves the dog alot of misery later on. Spay & neutering is also something that should be done unless the dog is specifically intended for breeding. It's not cruel.... it's the right thing to do.

In the long run, it's far more cruel to NOT have these things done.

I'm all for desexing domestic pets, unwanted offspring from pets is also a big problem and causes more unneeded suffering to innocent animals. I disagree, however, that animals need to be docked. for aesthetics. If a vet deems amputation of any body part is necessary to protect the dog's health then that is fine.

Dobermans however do not need to be docked, they're a big dog, their tails do not get in the way of anything else than their owners egos. As far as ears go, I can see no reason whatsoever to interfere with them and think that practice is unforgivable.

I think docking and dewclaws are essential... I've raised a few dobies, and they are extremely active... they're on 'Intense Mode' nearly 24 hours a day. As far as ears go, that's more of an owner preference nowdays... personally, I think they look good either way, but I prefer cropped.

btw, here in Hawaii, animals are required to have a microchip implanted in them.... is that also cruel?

I not sure what you mean by Intense mode Amp. Though my Dobies are very aware, they spend most of their day figuring out how to steal food from my 6 year old or sleeping. The funny thing about them is that a stranger can always get in to the house, but the dogs will not let him out unless they know him. I have had people come over and the dogs will stand guard. I will forget to introduce them and when it is time to go, they are at the door blocking the way. No teeth or growls, just giving the impression that no one is leaving.

As for the issue at hand... I don't believe in giving animals proceedures that they really don't need and can be injurious to them.. such as declawing cats. I don't always agree with docking tails of certain breeds of animals etc either, but SOME breeds of domestic dogs DO require some alteration in order to preserve their health. In those cases, I find it acceptable. If it's purely for aesthetics, it's wrong. Part of our largest cruelty to domestic animals was to breed them for aesthetics. They started developing health problems and it's an unfortunate side effect of using pets as a fashion accessory.
