how to get rust off of a basketball goal pole
 

my new one is starting to show signs of rust, how can I stop this from happening and how can I fix it?

I have an aluminum pole I got from TECO our power company.

Spray it down with some kind of weather proof coating....

Tremclad paint.

And once its rusted its pretty damn hard to get it off....

Rustoleum makes some products for it. One will somehow remove the oxidation from the rust and then it seals the metal to prevent further rusting. It works pretty good. Colors too! (or used to be)
