The United States has borrowed lots from the ancient Greeks, including such bedrock items as architecture, the Olympics, coinage, theater, and, most important, however, is the concept of democracy. Visitors to Athens can still view the official drinking cups and tableware used in the 5th century BC, when legislators were wined and dined at state expense. Not much, in fact, has changed since antiquity except the technology.
.
One aspect of ancient political life has not been adopted, however, and perhaps it's time to bring it back: ostracism. Once a year the Athenians would meet and vote on a simple question: Is anyone aiming at a tyranny, is anyone becoming a threat to the democracy? If a simple majority voted yes, then they dispersed and reassembled two months later. They brought with them their ostracon (a fragment of pottery), on which they had scratched the name of the person they thought represented a threat. The man with the most votes lost. He was exiled for 10 years, and this was thought to calm any anti-democratic leanings he might have.
.
In other words, the Athenians not only voted people into office, but they had a regular procedure for voting one person per year out of office. It was an option which could be exercised but did not have to be. The exiledid not involve confiscation or any other punitive measures; it was designed only to remove an individual from the political arena.

Who really cares?

Sarah_Jayne 07-24-2003 06:29 AM

I still hate him for being the face of the Presidential physical fitness tests in the late 80's. I can't see him without thinking of being forced to run a timed mile.

Hate him? C'mon, he was promoting fitness. Last time anyone checked, more fitness in the world was a good thing. If the guy had of swung by your school back then and gave a motivational speech, all the kids would have been going crazy for him. The guy is magnetic.

I bet he sensed that winning the governorship by any other means than a fair election would be a negative so he postponed his plans. The reason I think this is because the guy has class and self-respect. Hopefully he'll be back in it next time.

It means nothing when is 9am and you are in your gym shorts being forced to run a mile in the flipping cold. Sure it is a good cause but right there and then you really don't care.

Yeah, but at least you could partner with a friend on the situp portion of the test who could lie and say you did like 850 situps in the 1 minute of alotted time.

My gym teacher was a total asshole though, literally laughing out loud at the kids who couldnt do any pull-ups on that bar. Meanwhile, that fuck was 35 years old and working as a gym teacher in a catholic school...yeah, thats where the big bucks are. I always wondered what gym teachers were thinking when they got into it. "Hmm, I want to teach.....but I dont want to read. How about kickball for 40 years."

Christ I'm bitter.

I would blame my idiot teachers more than him. Lending his celebrity to the cause of fitness = more than most lameass stars are willing to do, but then again the guy has always promoted fitness from day one.

Class and self-respect? Isn't this the guy who has a reputation for groping news anchors, pinching asses on sets, and otherwise sexually harrassing every attractive girl he gets near?

I put about as much stock in hearsay and gossip as I do in negative opinions.

Asta la vista baby! LOL It would have been so stupid to run for gov, he's got nothing to do with politics, he's just a muscle man.

one more plus for being Canadian..not having to watch Arnold videos before running the mile. ANd the teachers didn't have a choice, the gov't made them make us do the tests.

mrmovie 07-24-2003 08:00 AM

I just saw the guy in Terminator 3. 50 plus years old and the guy looks like he is 35. I would vote for him because I know where he came from. Ever see that "pumping iron" movie?

You need to watch that and then you will get a great work out.

Just wonder if he has some the old bigotry from Austria still left inside him? But he does want to do a lot of good things for children.

He would get my vote.

Gemini 07-24-2003 08:07 AM

You have to meet Arnold to get the full impact of what he is. He hangs out here at least several times a year, and is always out there among the people ready to BS. lol He does have the attitude and the playfulness to get away with things that other men wouldn't dare to try tho. ;-)p

In the physical fitness thing in schools? S*ck it up. OUR gym teachers were running us in the snow with shorts on in the 60's and70's with no remorse. Most also taught other regular classes as well. But the point being is, WE didn't have all the sit in front of the tv stuff, games and what not. We actually played outside for HOURS every evening. Winter or Summer. The oberweight percentage was very low back then. Every grade had a traditional boy and girl that were overweight and that was about it.

We didn't figure he'd run on this recall election. It just doesn't fit his class at all. :thumbsup

Then it's your school administrations fault for scheduling P.E. at 9 am for you :1orglaugh

And believe me, with or without Arnie tapes, we Canadians had to run too, and I'd trade our weather for yours any day.

C_U_Next_Tuesday 07-24-2003 09:36 AM

I have a pic of Arny naked on one of my computers... damn he has a perfect physique :thumbsup

can't argue there but I guess with a school the size of ours someone had to have it at 9am. Oh, trust me I know you have cold weather but where I grew up was hardly the beach. I can prove that by the slight frostbite marks I have on my lower legs.

ah, we used to surf in that kind of weather all the time, and that was before they had wetsuits, and we had to walk, carrying our longboards up snow drifts 50' high just to get to the water :1orglaugh
