Are you in Las Vegas?

We're in the process of moving there and need opinions/information about broadband internet service.

Can you get it?
Where do you live?
DSL or Cable?
Who's your provider?
Is the service consistent?
Are you capped on downloads or uploads?

This would be for business class service assuming that's available. I've heard some horror stories and I'd like to get some concrete information from people who live or die by the quality of their internet connection.

Naughty 07-23-2003 03:04 PM

I'm there and all is good. Drinks, gambling, women, internet .. everything 110% in order.

That is in my dreams though:winkwink:

Ludedude 07-23-2003 03:13 PM

LOL But at least you'll have a place to visit when you come to town :)

Zoe_Zoebaboe 07-23-2003 03:39 PM

I live in NE Vegas.

The main internet service probiver is Cox.

Works pretty well for me, I dont have many complaints.

Are you capped on downloads or uploads? It depends on the service you choose. As far as limiting what you DL or UL, no.

1. Definitly.
2. Henderson aka Green Valley
3. I use cable, but DSL is available
4. Cox Cable
5. Unless there is major construction nearby, yes.
6. When are we going to organize a Vegas webmaster get together, damn it! I know there has to be around 20-40 of us!

lingolizzard 07-23-2003 05:14 PM

NE? in the airforce? cox pretty much has access all over the city and is the fastest, they work 7 days a week . sprint is pretty much limited to older parts of town.

Cox has lots of services for businesses. all speeds

same here, I lived in Green Valley when they first started introducing cable modems here...was Prime Cable at the time.

We really do need at lest a local drinking night or something...I mentioned to Ludedude the other night that it's odd...as long as I've lived here and I know very few webmasters who live here...but I'm sort of a hermit, so don't get out much.

AWC 07-23-2003 06:23 PM

I had Sprint DSL 1.5 down and 128 for over 3 years... very reliable... supports relaying.

Switched to Cox 3Mb down and 268 up about a month ago. It will not allow port 25 or 26 outgoing mail... and goes down more than a $5.00 crack whore.

Cox are fucking nazis... go for the DSL

Im on the same package and it blows..

Green Valley Here

I talked to a few people about a t1 and all are reasonable $600 or so but they all seem to want a 3 year contract :(

Ludedude 07-23-2003 06:38 PM

I've heard that about Cox so I'm doing my best to get space where DSL is available. I've had 1.7/512 DSL here for 3 years and while I'm paying through the nose ($110/month) it's completely deductible as a business expense and well worth the benefits. Not to mention that throughput doesn't crumble when the kids all get home from school and fire up CounterStrike at the same time.

The whole port 25 blocking thing is a bullshit maneuver by the cable guys to "prevent spamming" but in reality I'm guessing I can run my SMTP servers at my host on some other TCP port and get by that but still I don't like these guys having that much arbitrary control over what you can and can't do with the connection. Here we've got 32 static IP's, can run servers, no limit to down or uploads so I'm quite partial to a business DSL hookup. I understand that the major (only?) provider is Sprint/Earthlink but haven't read much good about them either.

Since there are obviously so many of us in the business based in Vegas we should be able to put together a night out to shoot the shit without too much difficulty. You all have about 6 weeks to get it together before I'm out there. Get on it :1orglaugh

AWC 07-23-2003 07:07 PM

I've tried mail on port 26 with Cox... no go. I had no problems with Sprint other than the initial setup. Very little down time at all with the DSL. It's definitely the way to go.

SexxxyChat-T 07-23-2003 08:59 PM

I live in the Green Valley/Henderson area too, I use Cox, I fucking hate them with a passion. They made me change my personal email address after 3 years of empire-building with it... their service always drops out. The last 3-4 months have been extremely bad, they dropped the plan I used to have and forced me to either pay more for a faster plan or pay the same amount for their shit plan, ever since then my connection has been the shits.

I also recommend buying your own cable modem since Cox will rape you for $10 bucks a month to "rent" theirs... or charge you $200 to buy one from them. I have a Toshiba PCX2500 ($60) and it's really nice.

The second there is an affordable alternative to those assholes here in Vegas I am switching.

And I'm like you SykkBoy2, I was born and raised in this city and I don't know any webmasters outside of SexxxyChat. I definitely need to get out more.

Ludedude 07-23-2003 09:16 PM

We're concentrating our search in the Henderson/Green Valley area and there is at least one CO that's lit with DSL so that's an alternative to shoot for.

I never really did buy into the whole cable internet frenzy since I'm intimately familiar with the technical side of networks but for the average person it's a humongous step up from dialup. Truth is though, I'll take what I can get and then look for other options.

Good advice about the modems :thumbsup

I don't mind forking out the bucks as long as it's to a solid and stable outfit that will help me with my business and not try to hinder it.

venus 07-23-2003 10:18 PM

I am in vegas, SW area.
cable modem is good, I have the business account, its 1.54 megs each way, cost is 300$ a month.

How do you get the 1.5 up?
I would like some of that

venus 07-23-2003 10:22 PM

Ludedude
the port blocking is only for the home accounts, real business accounts dont have port blocking.
I have my own email server, news server, video, chat,DNS,www servers, no problems using any of them, we also have 5 static IP addresses. All through Cox.

CHeck summerlin area, anywhere in NW part of town is good, summerlin if you can afford it. I lived there untill I moved to the new area of town in SW called Southern Highlands
http://www.southernhighlands.com/aboutus/index.php

summerlin is at
www.summerlin.com

summerlin area is best, congested, but a nice area.

venus 07-23-2003 10:24 PM

drunk dollars
call cox, ask for business dept, tell them you want a business cable modem, you get static IP's, 1.54 up and down
you will have to sign a years contract.

venus 07-23-2003 10:31 PM

Ludedude 07-23-2003 10:53 PM

Hi venus, thanks for the good info. We're looking primarily in the SE region (Henderson etc.) but there are a few places on our list in the SW area too.

I'm not averse to buying business level service if that's what I actually receive (that's what I'm doing now for my DSL service at home). It's good to know that Cox has plans in place that could accomodate us.

Love the plane :thumbsup

venus 07-23-2003 11:01 PM

cox will accomodate you any way you need.
They was emailing us trying to get us to co-lo our servers there and sell us DS1's (we used to have three T1's into our house when we lived in summerlin) good company if you know what you want from them and know what to ask for. If your just using their basic home service, expect to be treated like a basic home person who knows nothing.

Henderson bites a big one, we rented a town home there after we sold our other house and was waiting on our new one to be finished being built. Right now we are in vegas, but just accross the highway from Henderson, My horse is stabled in Henderson and our plane was at the henderson airport till we moved it to North Las Vegas airport.
NW is the place to go, lots of rentals there, nice condos for rent, 1000 sq ft condo for about 1200 a month, garage also.

Whats wrong with Henderson?

venus 07-23-2003 11:11 PM

oh, one more thing, stay away from north, NE areas, people may want to flame me for saying that but, henderson is like an old folks home, North is not a good area, take that how you want, but lots of bars on windows.
the SW seems more like being in the country, NW is trendy area and summerlin is touted as a good place to raise a family. lots of parks, bike paths, hiking, close to red rock, good views of the city and the strip and lots of traffic. SW, like I said, its more like the country right now.
Guess it all depends on your life style (and income level).

I am to young to live around all those old people. Its like an old folks home there.
The cops have a bad habit of beating people up, did you see the 70 yr old man on the news awhile back they beat up for spitting on the ground.

There is one good area in Henderson, thats Seven Hills, houses start at around 250k, but its right beside the airport and you get all those planes flying over you.

I personally prefer summerlin or around the buffalo/vegas dr. area, I like it better then souther highlands, the best thing about this part of town is less traffic and I can have my horse near me.

I'm in Desert Shores, right on the edge of Summerlin. Got 5 lakes here and parks and all that neat shit. Right near Buffalo & Mariner.

Got 24 static ip's from cox and 3mbps downstream / 256k upstream for $400 a month.

The page doesnt show much, but the area is nice

Cool, I live in a trendy area.

I use Cox Cable. I have the Downstream 3 Mbps/Upstream 256 kbps service for $49.99/mo. (I own my modem and I have all the cable channels, so I save <g> $20). The service is mostly good where I am. It drops for a couple minutes occasionally when people come home from work around 5p. My service might be better than Summerlin right now though because there are fewer people living in Centennial Hills.

Ludedude 07-24-2003 11:16 AM

venus, thanks for the great stuff. Always nice to get some "in-depth" reporting.

MrPheer...cool deal. I hadn't heard of Desert Shores until now so I'll try take a ride over there and see what's what. In any case, no matter where we end up, it looks like there is at least some form of broadband access available; we'll just have to pony up for the business plans so we can keep doing what we've been doing.

That "dropping off at 5 pm deal" is what blows about shared networks like the cable companies have architected. The more crowded an area gets, the worse the problem can be.

Funny thing is you do NOT live in "Vegas."

Looking at the map from the Sun you more than likely live in either Paradise, or Enterprise.

In fact the strip is located in Paradise. However the U.S. Postal Service just uses Vegas for convenience.

I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't read the article
Las Vegas: Bright lights, but not a big city in the Sunday Sun.

The only real "vegas" is the North West, then you have North Las Vegas to the north of course, and NE is Sunrise Manor and East is Whitney and South East is Henderson.

Then West of the strip is Spring Vallery, and Southwest is Enterprise.

Nothing but a bunch of unincorporated towns...LOL.

Actually the strip, is in las vegas and clark county, it also runs up to north las vegas. I dont remember the street that seperates it from clark county, they discussed it when the county was wanting to make those wierd changes to the dancing laws.
