Brain Teaser #1.5
3 guys rent a hotel room (I like it already!) for $30. After
they leave, the manager of the hotel realizes that she has overcharged them. The room costs only $25. "Oh no!" she exclaims, "I have overcharged them!" She promptly gives the bell hop the 5 bucks and tells him to give it back to the guys. "Man, 3 guys and 5 bucks! How can I possibly divide this equally without the use of multivariable calculas or a powerful scientific solar powered calculator!" Thinking quickly, he pockets 2 dollars and gives each of the guys 1 dollar back. The guys renting the hotel room think something's fishy. If they each payed $9 for a total of $27, and the bell hop kept $2, where is the extra dollar? ($9x3=$27, $27+2=$29 -- where be the extra dollar!) |
don't all try and guess at it at once now
|
they didn't pay $9 each they paid $9.3333 each........
|
$25 (room rate) + $2 (what the bellboy kept) = $27
$27 + $3 (the change the three guys received) = $30. |
it's only in the formulation...
They gave her 30$..it was 25$..so she took 5$...gave them a dollar each (3$)...and she kept 2$....(3+2=5....5+25 =30....) there you have it....:glugglug |
Dude, if they rented the hotel room for $30, they didn't pay $9 each. They paid $10 each.
|
Your doing the math wrong..

You should be saying, they payed a total of $27 and the bell hop kept $2, making $25 wich is what the manager kept. $9x3=$27, $27-$2 = $25 |
