She does not have good health...but I am going to get a break as she and a friend...are going on a 10 day Alaskan cruise next month. Actually neither of them have good health and I don't think it is a good plan for either of them (have not told them that)...but what the hell...if they survive it I guess they should enjoy what little life they have left...and I assume the cruise ships are prepared for health failing emergencys.

So spend some time with her while you still have the chance. You'll feel better for it.

I guess a guy owes it to his mother to take care of her when her health starts to fail. Hell, she took care of you for, what, 18 years.

It's only fair, I suppose, even though it probably sucks from time to time. In any case, IMHO there is no doubt that she should go on that cruise. As you said, she should enjoy what little life she has left. I know I would.

But then again, what the hell do I know. I'm 22, and though my mothers health is failing miserably as well, I rarely get myself together and call her, let alone visit her.

Did you yourself decide to take care of her? If so, that's some choice to make...

I have been caring for her since her husband died and I intend to continue caring for her until she dies.

I know you have King... But have you ever sat down with her and just held her hand? Just play it off that you'll miss her while she's on her cruise if it comes up as to why you are doing it.

Trust me you'll feel alot better. I fought shy of my Mom alot and then the time I got to spend with her at the end, she was drugged out and didn't even know I was there.

And the hubby's Mom, she passed suspiciously (even tho she was and had been very ill for along time) He hadn't even spoken to her for several months before her passing. His grand niece showed up at our door one day with tears in her eyes. What a way to find out...

Check with the cruise lines to check on the medical situation on the ship. And make sure they know they have two elderly women so they are prepared. They usually have pretty good docs but that way you have your bets coppered. ;-)

First off...you should (even if your relationship is not that great) call and visit as frequently as possible...because you may very well live with regret for the rest of your life if you don't.

Bottom line answer...I was asked...and I agreed.

Yes...I intend to call the tour agency and inquire about their on board medical facilities. My mother and her friend just finalized the trip a couple of days ago...and they embark...I believe on the 8th.

Get her a nice journel and pen to write with and alot of film for her camera! She can write down what she sees in her own way and thats worth millions to you to view things thru her eyes, :)

Oh and call the cruise line direct. Tour Agencies will tell you anything sometimes. So speak to the source. Not the in betweens.

quiet 07-21-2003 05:42 AM

defintitely cool for them to go on a cruise. i'm sure it will be a good thing for everyone involved (including you).

You are correct...the tour agency is not the one to contact. I have been teasing her about it being the "Love Boat". She is taking a cam corder.
