I have one of these from my old house -- http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Pro...rod=253&site=c
Now I have a wireless DSL router from Qwest that is not nearly as powerful but the two arent compatible. |
Netgear, low cost and gets the job done
|
I use linksys. I can sit in my backyard with the lappy without a prob.

hey Roger, if I get the 802.11b I can run a combination of hardwire and wireless? (that's how it looks to me at least.... unless I'm missing something)

I have one hard wired and 3 on PC cards 802.11b |
sweet.... I think I'll try that one, chain it to my BEFSR41W, run hardwire off that, and wireless off the 802.11b....
how's the range? I don't need too much range, but it needs to be a solid link through some structure... like, through the ceiling almost directly above and a little bit to the left of the main input. |

the one in my bedroom and it works fine Actually I have one hard wired one on wireless usb adapter and two Laptops with PC cards 802.11b what does suck is I'm always online. LOL |
cisco areoport 350 WAP you can attach bigger attena if u have a big back yard :)
|
Linksys also has 24HR support. so they are solid
and I think best buy has some good deals on it right now. |

(even though I had one of their routers flat out die on me back in '01) |
the wireless I need it for the most isn't a critical deal.... but it does need to work... I just hate to buy all this shit and then find out it's not gonna go through the ceiling or something... I thought maybe the Seimens Powerline might be better, but I'm having trouble finding any of it online...
I actually prefer 100% hardwire.... no guessing. :winkwink: but I really don't wanna string Cat 5 from upstairs down to the studio just for one stinking connection. 4 years ago, I would have jumped on it.... now though, fuck that... the quicker & easier, the better. (old age is setting in) |

its like $70 for a 4 port switch router now and $70 for a 802.11b It used to be like $150 or something |

if its a laptop then use a card. If it doesn't work you can always return them and try something else |
the best thing to do is put in a panel and run that shit through the walls to every damn room....
wait... I'm feelin' that old spark again! nah... nevermind... it's gone now. yeah, I found a deal on the router and the cards together. I'll go with the Linksys. :) |
gotta use the pci card... it's a 1U rackmount...
|
wireless kicks ass! i've been without wires (for the most part) since '00
