Buying cars from Japan

Anyone have any experience buying a vehicle from Japan and registering it in Canada or the States?

hyper 07-20-2003 08:23 PM

you cant import a car from japan into the states that is not available for purchase here..
ie: nissan skyline, unless you put a big bond up.. also it must conform to u.s vehicle regulations

why not just go to a dealer, they have imported cars for sale already

MassAppeal 07-20-2003 08:40 PM

RHD. Love it. Just like the UK, babe. :D

you do realize they drive on the other side of the road !

if you import you need to add the cost of converting them
to left/right hand drive!

Right hand drive will be fun. Imagine the looks you get when you get out of the passenger side.

It will feel like your driving a mail truck too!

Yeah and it will work real well until you need to buy food at a drive thru or use an atm or go to the bank.

Just go to the Rally's by my house. They have two drive-through lanes, one of which has the pickup window on the passenger's side.

Im in Canada and Im not to sure what the regs are regarding this..
The reason I am interested in JDM vehicle is the car I was going to buy was sold. I've also seen a few other japanese vehicles around including a skyline. It would be interesting to see what it takes to register one here.

Why don't you just have a local dealer order you a car?

yellofello 07-20-2003 10:11 PM

if you were going to go the supra / mr2 route, why not just buy the cheapest one you can find here and import a JDM-spec engine / etc...? if you're in vancouver, there's plenty of shops that should be able to do that for you, and it sure beats the hell out of paying to convert a car to LHD
