When will streaming video quality surpass DVD?

Seems like it might be a little while before an internet home entertainment system rolls out that can quickly download DVD quality movies -- but it's still coming...

Now that Penthouse and Playboy are out of the way -- time to tackle the movie industry :)

id think pretty long. Technology might advance quick but it takes a long time to become mainstream. I would have thought hdtv would be mainstream now ( in the majority of american homes) but its nowhere near that.

I was just thinking --- look at P2P music sharing. People are willing to take a cut in audio quality in order to have that convenience. You could say P2P is pretty much mainstream now -- the music industry is fucked. I'd say in 2 years full movie trading will be just as popular. Well it is already popular but I'd say probably many people still don't have the hardware at home to play a full feature film... You need a good sized drive, enough CPU or video acceleration to get a smooth framerate, and broadband access -- and that's about it... right?

I don't really download movies yet -- but I'm sure I could get new movie releases on IRC -- but it's not as easy as you would think... I tried it once and it was hell -- you end up waiting in queue forever only to get access to a maze of confusing directories and files compressed in archaic formats... I love IRC but it's just not a handy tool compared to P2P. Is there a standard resolution these days for trading feature film movies?
