Elderly driver may have hit car before market tragedy, police say

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The elderly driver who plowed through a farmers market, killing 10 people and injuring dozens more, might have been fleeing the scene of another collision at the time, police said Friday.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that Russell Weller, 86, hit a Mercedes after leaving a post office, then sped less than a block west toward the street market, California Highway Patrol spokesman Tom Marshall said. Details about the Mercedes crash were not immediately available.

"We're trying to do two things: determine first of all that he hit the Mercedes, and two, what his motivation was for leaving if he did hit it," Marshall said.

Whats bullshit though is they released him saying he wasnt a flight risk since he was 96.

It shouldnt matter if your 100 years old the law is the law, its called

Is he rich? I haven't seen all the coverage, but how else could he be getting such good treatment? He must have some good lawyers or, as you said, know the right people.

The guy is old. Nobody is going to treat him like some 18 year old punk, it would end up killing him. If he ends up getting sentenced to jail, he won't be there long, he'll die pretty quickly. There's nothing to live for.

They'll probably sentence him to a medical facility of some sort. There's no point of trying to rehabilitate the guy, and punishment is almost just as pointless.

I feel sorry for old people who fuck up but this guy killed way too many people so fuck him! Plus he crashed into his own home two times before and there is a 10 yr old video of him crashing into a wall at a party he was going to. He should have faced the fact that he can't drive before he killed people. Fuck him.
The last stupid bitch that left the guy in the windshield got 60 yrs so he should get the max for killing 10 people.

Ok, if it turns out he was fleeing the scene of another accident, and killed these 10 people during that process, isn't that killing 10 people in the commission of a crime? What are the penalties in that case?

In California if a death occurs during a crime then the perputrator is charged with murder and the penalty can be death by leathal injection.
But no need to waste an injection on this old fart if convicted because he'll croak before his third appeal anyway.

You obviously have no understanding of the law. You can be released on bail for murder as long as you are not a flight risk, unless it is a capital murder case. In this country you are still innocent until proven guilty.
