UN chief 'seeks Iraqi handover'

The United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is set to call for a swift handover of sovereignty to the Iraqi people, the BBC has learned.

The recommendations are contained in a report due to be presented to the UN Security Council next week, a copy of which has been obtained by the BBC.

The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.
States first established international organizations to cooperate on specific matters. The International Telecommunication Union was founded in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, and the Universal Postal Union was established in 1874. Both are now United Nations specialized agencies.

In 1899, the International Peace Conference was held in The Hague to elaborate instruments for settling crises peacefully, preventing wars and codifying rules of warfare. It adopted the Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes and established the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which began work in 1902.

The forerunner of the United Nations was the League of Nations, an organization conceived in similar circumstances during the first World War, and established in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security." The International Labour Organization was also created under the Treaty of Versailles as an affiliated agency of the League. The League of Nations ceased its activities after failing to prevent the Second World War.

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks, United States in August-October 1944. The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 Member States.

The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories. United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 October each year.

Maybe you should read the United Nations history. Once before the UN was named " The League of Nations". That's terminated by the way for not responding.

Jeez, Didnt the UN not want us to go to war in Iraq? If we did not listen then we are not going to listen now.

More oil for US!

F the UN!

TheFLY 07-18-2003 12:09 PM

Hmmm... Shit I'm not sure what to say. I want a safe place to live here in the USA -- on the other hand I don't want our leaders to be fucking up the world with a renegade military and exporting weapons of mass destruction for $$$... Maybe US leaders see some serious economic troubles ahead due to globalization and this is just the only way they know how to deal with the problem? I think the real problem is that Americans are fucking spoiled and we need to get back to the our roots -- growing food and surviving without fucking Walmart... ???

You are terminally ignorant!

The United Nations did NOT use to be the League of Nations.
The League of Nations was formed after WWI. The United States Congress voted NAY on joining the League of Nations which killed it. It all but completely disappeared in the mid 1920s.

The United Nations was formed after **WWII**! We are one of the charter members of the U.N. (unlike the "League of Nations."

Any business is only as shady as the people who are involved. Perhaps you should take some reponsibility for your own actions instead of painting the webmaster industry with such a broad brush.

Yeah we are so far behind the rest of the world in running a country..........:1orglaugh .....I find it so interesting when MONKEYS learn to speak. UN has done wonders for the US. LOL Without the US the UN would not exist. All the rest of the countries in the world do not have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out of in comparison. The fact of the matter is when the UN decides the "world" needs help, the US always take the bulk of the burden. So far all you NON US citizens......enjoy your free shit.(Food, medicine, machinery, engineering, PROTECTION from your regional "brothers" who wish to conquer your country) Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Say thanks and be glad we give a fuck about keeping "OUR BITCHES" on the street. You are OWNED, from your leaders to your street sweepers, and can do nothing but talk about it. Annan wants the US out, not the UN. It's impossible for the Security Council to want the US to do something to does not wish since the US has veto power.

This brings up a very valid point. The United States has always carreied the burden of enforcing the UN demands. After the Gulf war, it was the US and England who enforced the no fly zone, as set forth by the UN and agreed upon by Iraq.

That's right. It was our planes being shot at.

See! There is a conscience in America. From all the Americans I've talked to this is the sentiment I'm seeing and one that gets no media at all.

I mean, civilization means that humanity moves forward not back - like Einstein said:

"I don't know with what weapons the Third World War will be fought but the fourth will be with sticks and stones"

Americans are very smart -- it's just that senile old people like to vote and they have nothing else to do but watch the "idiot box" -- they really are living in a twilight zone between games of bingo. :1orglaugh

That's not true.. The US occassionally carries the burden like in Iraq, but there are plenty of instances where the US hasn't done diddly squat..

The UN has many operations around the world, not just Iraq

pornguy 07-18-2003 04:34 PM

If all the countries in this world hate us so much, send us back the american printed dollars, and stop doing business with any american companies..Then see how well your country is doing.

If you have a US dollar in your pocket, then you have NO RIGHT to bitch about the US. Remember that most of us do not agree with everything that is going on, but we are not spending money from your country and complaining about the way you handel the world.

I think that the old saying is, Dont bite the hand that feeds you.

And this country feeds most of the world in one way or another.

The UN can make all the recommendations they want. The USA is not going to turn shit over to the UN. We might give them an Island to move there HQ's to after we kick there corrupt ass's out of the USA. The UN is so fucked up. Swift hand over *HELLO* then we'll be right back over there in 10 years.
