Cold-war sirens coming back as "terror warnings"

Cities Ready Sirens As Terror Warnings
By TIM TALLEY

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Cold War-era sirens may be revived as terrorism warnings. Cities including Oklahoma City, Chicago and Dallas have upgraded their outdoor warning systems with a type of siren that can carry voice announcements - an idea that officials say took on added importance in the post-Sept. 11 world.

Sirens have long been used for storm disasters, but now the Federal Emergency Management Agency is studying whether they can warn people of biological, chemical or nuclear attack.

Your attempt at sarcasm really falls short since it implies that the people of Oklahoma would be crazy to think that any terrorist activity might hit their city.

I guess you've never heard of Timothy McVeigh and the Alfred P. Murrah building.

No, my sarcasm was meant to imply that Oklahoma City isn't worth saving from terrorists.

I can remember those sirens as a kid.. Occassionally they would let those things rip and you would have something similar to a fire alarm drill.

As a kid hearing those sirens going off was some scary shit. Not understanding what the significance of the sirens were for and not knowing what the hell was going on.

Anyone else remember those drills?

I remember the sirens all too well. Still hear them too. lol They use them for tornado warnings here. Tested every Wednesday at noon to make sure they are all working.

The first time I heard a voice one was after we moved to this house. 4:30am and I hear this loud voice screaming to take cover, TORNADO! I shook the old man up and he didn't know they talked either but we discussed it as we flew down the basement steps. :1orglaugh

I still get a kick how they would tuck us under desks or into the hall in school with your head on the floor and hunkered down. Like THAT would save you from an atomic blast!! We had them about once a week and they scared some of the kids really bad. I guess it might have helped us when we were young enough to believe we were protecting ourselves.

You got that right..

And as if having to dive under a desk didnt scare kids enough, a few years later they make the movie "The Day After".

Thats really when kids started shitting their knickers.. That movie really fucked up alot of kids (adults too)

Not sure, but the original intention was to give folks a fore warning. Like a tornado for example.

Where I lived where tornados were not a threat, those sirens meant INCOMING!!!
