England is a rough place to move to. The work permit and visa situationis quite tight.

You can get a 6 month tourist visa if you have a round-trip ticket and enough money to live off of. You will not be allowed to work, and can be deported if you try.

You can't get a work permit unless you get accepted to a job for which you have special experience, usually 3 years of full time exeperience and/or a graduate degree. You also have to be demonstrably more qualified than any UK applicant.

If you are from the Commonwealth (Canada, UK, Australia, etc.) then you can get a working holiday visa, and work there for up to two years.

If you come on a Student Visa, then you can work part-time during the term, and full-time during breaks. You need proof of enrolment, as well as proof that you can support yourself, to get a student visa.

Only if you are employed by a US company. Affiliate checks count as being self-employed.

Also, keep in mind that without a work permit, you can't have indefinite leave to remain. Along with the right to work comes the right to stay.

England is cold and expensive, but they have football!
Come to Spain. It's dead cheap, nice weather and the police doesn't care that much if you have a worknig Visa or not, all you need is a internet connection. The rules are if you want to live here for longer than 3 months you have to become a resident here, I've been here almost 2 years and I'm still not a resident.
Also I know an illegal Argentinian immigrant that set up his own company here, so you can see how easy it is :glugglug

If you are an employee of a US company, then you have another option. You can write (as the company) to the UK embassy, and apply for a "Sole Representative" visa to send one employee to the UK. That employee can be you.

Barcelona is just a boat ride from Ibiza, the nightlife is great, and the girls are pretty, although the Spanish girls are a bit difficult, but the tourist chicks are a pice of cake :thumbsup

if i read you post correctly awhile back, you said the cost of living was pretty cheap? as long as i can get a cable connection i am happy.

Gunni 07-11-2003 08:42 AM

Internet connections are not cheap unfortunately, I pay 45 euros (50-55$) for a 256/128 adsl connection. But everything else is quite cheap. You can get a flat for about 600 euros a month, 200-300 if you share it. And most other things are quite cheap, I don't know the pricing in the USA, but here you get a pint of beer for maybe 2.50 euros (at normal bars, not tourist traps). Three course lunch for 6-10 euros, buffets the same, cigarettes for 2 euros.

England is about 2 times more expensive (exept the internet connection)
