The unofficial IMPA sig-button DESIGN CONTEST!!

Show your support in the fight against ACAC|A!

Ok, so here's how this will work.....

Submit your "Support the IMPA" sig button designs to this thread.

Note: Your submissions will be public domain and available for anyone to use as their sig buttons to show their support for the IMPA and the fight against Acacia's patent claims.

On Sunday July 20th at 12:01am GST (Forum Time), we will stop 'officially' taking submissions & I will pool all the submississions together in a nice little off site voting script.

We will then let the voting script run until Thursday July 24th at 12:01am GST (Forum time) & then the winners will be selected based on who's design got the most votes.

To deter fraudulent voting:
Only one vote will be accepted per registered GFY nick name. A person with a moderate amount of posts (we'll say over 50, but it could be more or less) will count as a real vote of "2 points", While someone with under 50 posts will count as half a point. We'll also track the number of raw votes your submission(s) receive just so you know how many people liked picked your design :thumbsup.

In addition to the fame and seeing your button design everywhere....

The awards will be:

1st Place: 50.00 contributed to the IMPA in your name.
2nd Place: 25.00 contributed to the IMPA in your name.
3rd Place: 10.00 contributed to the IMPA in your name.

($85 of the pool sponsored by PaysitePowertools.com)

Also, if anyone thinks this is a good idea, and wants to ADD to this award donation pool feel free to hit me up in ICQ and make your pledge. I'll post the updates here, either with your company name or your initials (or nothing at all if you prefer).

So there we go. Let the games begin :)

PLEASE NOTE: This design contest is not officially supported or endorsed by the Internet Media Protective Association (IMPA)

nice and good luck :thumbsup

Mr.Fiction 07-08-2003 07:35 PM

Good idea. I have never used a sig on GFY, but I will add an IMPA sig if someone makes one.

Spunky 07-08-2003 07:36 PM

Excuse my ignorance.WTF is IMPA?

gothweb 07-08-2003 07:39 PM

It would be cool to see some banners in rotation on GFY, too. Likewise, it would be cool if adding a IMPA button didn't count towards the usual sig limits.

goBigtime 07-08-2003 07:50 PM

The IMPA is the Internet Media Protective Association non-profit organization that is being formed by people in (and out?) of this industry in order to fight ACACIA's patent claims.

If you work with movies or audio on your sites, or TGP's or whatever, Acacia wants a cut of your GROSS sales... irregardless of if you even turned a profit. If you took in any money, they want a cut.

A search of GFY for ACACIA can help you understand what they are about.

Right, I was going to wait awhile to post that, but I was going to suggest that maybe Lensman could allow a second sig button if it was an IMPA sig button as well.

John3 07-08-2003 08:12 PM

I'll use it for my sig. :thumbsup

Here, I've made one to get the ball rolling...

Ugh this is a pretty pathetic.

It's pretty sad when designers will sit and spend hours working on putting John Travolta's head on everything - but when it comes to showing support for an organization like the IMPA --- nothing.

You would think the designers out there would want to help support the people who pay their bills.

The Truth Hurts 07-09-2003 12:12 AM

Pretty sad, isn't it?

Most of the designers here aren't really designers, they're recycling specialists, and can't initiate something on their own.

Plus, they're all too busy undercutting each other for that next recycled design project to worry about a donation prize.

Plus you put such a far away conclusion to the contest...
if you wanted instant results, you might have set the deadline in a couple days or less, not 2 weeks from now.

Why is that??

Personally, I'd rather see a live IMPA site that I can visit, read, and contribute in my own way.
I'm never going to see the signatures anyway.

The Truth Hurts I guess :Oh crap

Well forget about it. I win.

I'll just donate the money myself damnit. :)

As far as the IMPA endorsing such an event... I doubt that would *ever* happen, as I'm sure the button submissions would get a little out of hand, probably a little defamation here and there (Travolta?) etc.

I think their site will be up pretty soon though.

The donation links are supposed to be up within the next couple days.

Maybe I'll redo this design contest with a shorter deadline...

Or maybe I'll try to figure out how to incorporate KimmyKim's tits into the event. I'm sure that will help get a better turnout.

But seriously people... I really hope the bulk of you don't plan to sit back and let everyone else bear the burden of supporting the IMPA's fight against Acacia (or any other bad guys that come our way).

For us, we may not be directly liable for any payments to them either way, but we're still going to support the IMPA because that organization is being put in place to protect the companies we do business with. :2 cents:

I hear ya...

I was just hoping it would turn out to be a fun little design contest like all the photochop chopshops & low budget logo design contests that pass through here. I mean those will usually get 10-20 people submitting graphics/designs & most of them are for nothing.

I was hoping it would give a little exposure to the upcoming IMPA site and all, get people more familar with them.

Apparently people either have no idea about what this is about, or they just don't care.

It's scary either way.

goBigtime 07-09-2003 12:40 AM

But I'm not going to bitch about it anymore.

With all the prior art that was dug up yesterday, there shouldn't be a problem winning the case. The problem will just be raising enough funds to pay the ultra high-dollar IP attorneys to properly present the case. They are still going to need to a lot of high-priced leg work getting all the facts straight and examples of the prior art together.

Well, if you want to be taken seriously you will stick to the original deadline. I added you to my calendar but the deadline as per this post is 07.20. That's another 10 days. Why are you screaming? Not to mention it's a free job.

No respect.
