A very old institution (patent offices) not being able to keep up with modern technology and people taking advantage of that.

Mutt 07-07-2003 07:42 AM

in the words of Mike Tyson, it's ludacrist and extortionable.

KRL 07-07-2003 07:43 AM

Like I said in the other post, if its not them it'd be some other company working with sabre tooth attorneys.

These grizzly bear law firms do this for living and make tens of millions of dollars in the process. They wake up each day and say who can we fuck with next and legally extort money from.

The patent office is overwhelmed both in sheer volume and the technology within all the applications. It takes years from start to finish.

Brujah 07-07-2003 07:46 AM

Does their patent predate Cornell's CUSEEME protocol ?

Some info on streaming technology.

just had to point out that in this case, the lawyers aren't working for a company. the lawyers are the company.

carry on...

I don't like acacia.

ZoiNk 07-07-2003 08:09 AM

Acadia has the patent, untill it is overturned, I can see people paying, since it is a valid patent at the moment. Just b/c you don't think it should have been issued doesn't mean it wasn't issued unfortunitely. I am personally behind the companies that want it overturned, don't get me wrong on that.

Does anyone know if this is their physical address or just some mail drop?

Acacia Research Corporation
500 Newport Center Drive
7th Floor
Newport Beach, CA 92660

With so much money at stake, I'd think they would be worried about their safety. Who knows what kind of people are out there that might serve them with their own kind of justice.

I'm just concerned about their safety, that's all. :)

Acacia is pulling this large "money ploy" because they can. They have looked for and discovered a loophole somewhere in the way media is delivered via the internet, and are now exibiting themselves as being some of the worst form opportunistic scum on the planet. The individuals that make up what is known as Acacia, all those responsible for this reprehensible act, will surely come to regret the day they set this bullshit in motion, if there is any justice at all in the world.

There, I said it.

sumphatpimp 07-07-2003 08:25 AM

once these clowns make a few bucks and have a company of any kind of value big brother Microsoft will come along and squash them like the little parasite that they are.

If they are lawyers I sure as hell don't need their help or advice.
Pisss poor planning and biz stradegy.

Microsoft don't bother them now because they are not worth anything, and why not let them do all the grunt work, then swallow them up when the time is right. Thats the corporate world.

TheJimmy 07-07-2003 10:12 AM

my thoughts are I think they're fucking clowns that need a smack down for wasting a lot of time and money on that rediculous claim...

didn't someone try that same shit with 'framed' pages a few years back?

I guess someone ought to copyright a "." and get some lawyers on the case...a lot of people keep using "." and I'm a big abuser myself............................................ .

I consider it almost like trying to patent/trademark/copyright anything terribly common, ie: the display of html and images over the internet, someone should dig up the first person/company to do that shit and go extorting money from all the websites online for using their 'streaming of text & graphics' through their HTML technology that they built.....what is the internet if NOT streaming shit....and if truely they were the first ever to build this technology then why didn't they start the C&D's from day one??????

why wait until almost a decade later to start going after media sites???? were all their lawyers stoned or on vacation?

just another sharkish company trying to leach some milk off the Internet tit....
