Hey dont run Linux, run FreeBSD, have your software at a decent version, dont use PHP, and you shouldnt have a problem with hacks. DDOS is a nother story, but at least you wont have your shit rm -rf / :)

That was slapper and it affected MS SQL not MySQL. One of the servers I was administering at that time was running windows and got infected its throughput went to about 95 megabits. Thats why you shouldnt run windows.

NONE of my SQL Servers were affected. If people would keep their shit up to date, this shit wouldn't happen.

They've defaced a lot of sites already. Just not making the news.

Tons of corporate servers were affected as well. Then again if MS made software that was easily upgradeable then people would have their stuff patched better, and if they also released fixes faster. But people are often scared to update because half of their shit doesnt work after the updates. When I update my apache or MySQL Im never worried about data loss or downtime, but you best have some caution when applying windows updates, otherwise you are just tempting fate.

whats funny. is the reward for the winner is like 500 megs of space on some site... like some fbi dude said.. they can easily take control of other servers and gain more than that so the reward is kind of a joke.

Anyone who doesn't use a test server for any updates whether they're MS or not, is tempting fate.

That is not entirely true, would you setup a test server to upgrade apache?

Well, yeah, since I'd have a test WWW server, I'd upgrade that first.
