Will 2004 be the year that 800x600 is finally dead?

From the stats I've seen, less than 35% of surfers are currently using 800x600 screen resolution or lower. Most are on 1024x768 or higher.

I hate 800x600. I hate paying designers to build sites for the 800x600 morons, and I wish it would just die.

In the past 2 years, I've bought 3 computers and the default setting in all of them has been 1024x768 or higher. So I assume if people are still using 800x600 they must be using a computer that was made pre-2001. Therefore they're cheap asses and probably fuck goats in their spare time.

Also, I've read that about 125 million new computers are sold each year, and I assume the default setting is at least 1024x768. So more and more people will be tossing the old piece of shit and upgrading to something better.

Soooooo, the question of the day is: Should I give a shit about the luddites that are still on 800x600? Will 2004 be the year that we all stop designing for 800x600?

bhutocracy 07-06-2003 04:07 AM

unfortunately no.. but the upshot is that even if people were mostly all on 1024x768 a page designed for 800x600 would still load faster for all the people still on dialup.

Why in the heck would you purposefully design a site that would exclude a potential customer? A shitload of office desktops are real fucking old.

So are you still designing sites for 640x480? Because people are still using that too, but there comes a time where you have to say fuck it and choose a new minimum standard, and I think the day when 1024x768 qualifies as that standard is very near.

it's thinking like that that keeps many people in this business from not making as much money as they could

Bear, I had someone on this very board complain about how my sig was too big because I didn't "design" (took 2 seconds) it for 800x600. If there are webmasters still looking at this board in 800x600 theres gotta be surfers still.

800x600 will be around for a long ass time. At least another 3 years, but most computers today come with a 17"+ monitor or 15" LCD, both of which use 1024x768 as default. It will wane in the coming years.

:2 cents:

e-Stefan 07-06-2003 04:26 AM

it is too early to say that 1024*768 is the minimum standart - mostly i'm using 1280*1024 or 1600*1200, but:
1024x768 53.66%
1280x1024 19.51%
800x600 14.63%
etc.
832x624 2.44% :1orglaugh
(stat for my site - 3 place).

I still surf at 800x600, text is to small any higher, I like it and *WILL* not change. should have added True Color 24 bit

again, if you are "deciding" what the minimum us, you're wasting traffic.

I don't decide what the minimum is, surfers do. But there will come a day when 800x600 dies. It dies more and more every day.

All my sites are optimized for 800x600, but I think it's a waste of space and can't wait until 1024x768 truly takes over.

Sassyass 07-06-2003 04:59 AM

What stats are you looking at?

titmowse 07-06-2003 05:04 AM

"Nov 11 2002: New research from OneStat.com indicates that 1024 x 768 is the most popular screen resolution for exploring the Internet.

Approximately 46.1 percent of Internet users around the world set their screen resolution at 1024 x 768 pixels. This compares with 34.3 percent of Internet users who set their resolution at 800 x 600 pixels.

Only 13.1 percent of Internet users set their resolution at 1280 x 1024, according to the study, while just 3.9 percent of users choose a resolution of 1153 x 864.

The fifth most popular screen resolution on the Web is 640 x 480 pixels with 1.1 percent of Net users choosing it."

31.7% of six hundred and five point six million people is a lot of surfers.

Yes it is, but it is dropping, and it's dropping faster and faster all the time. Like I said before, every new computer I've bought in the last 2 years has default 1024x768 or higher resolution, and most people are too stupid to know how to change it to 800x600 even if they wanted to.

800x600 will die, if for no other reason than the fact that everytime someone buys a new computer it comes with 1024x768 or higher resolution as the default setting, and most people buy a new computer every 4 years OR they just buy a new video card. Either way, it seems that 800x600 will be virtually dead within the next 2 years.

titmowse 07-06-2003 05:30 AM

okay. guess we'll see. two years is a long time. i'd say it would drop to around 25 percent in two years. 25 percent of anything is something.

Thats a helluva lot of surfers and potentially a lot of waisted money! We still design our site for 800x600 and I try to check about once per week that gallery descriptions are short enough so that they do only take up one line as I am viewing my own sites on 1024x768.

I would think its not too wise to count out these people who use bigger screen resolution. They might very well be buying your stuff :)

Arty 07-06-2003 06:50 AM

Don't forget that those are screen resolutions not necessarily the browser window size..

Most of the 800x600 users surfs whit maximized browser window..

But not much of the 1024x768 users do that.. They just keep the browser around %70-80 of screen so that's a nearly the same size.

So etiher you can do the browser maximize hahahahahahahahahaha shit, or just can't be sure all 1024x768 surfers will see evertying on your site designed for 1024x768.
