Defacer?s Challenge
Ready to face the defacer
WASHINGTON, July 5. ? Companies around the world are on alert against a threatened wave of cyber attacks on their computers tomorrow but many experts say the so-called ?Defacer?s Challenge? could be a hacker?s hoax.
The site announcing the challenge has been taken off the Internet but the authorities in the USA and computer security experts have asked companies to ensure that their systems are not vulnerable. The international hacking contest is scheduled to begin tomorrow. The original announcement on defacers-challenge.com promised points to hackers who breached an organisation?s server and defaced its web pages. The challenge aimed to deface up to 6,000 websites over six hours, security experts said. Internet Security Systems Inc. and other leading consultants have issued warnings to clients. ?Website administrators should ensure that their sites are not vulnerable,? said Mr Peter Allor of ISS, an Atlanta-based company that runs the Information Technology Information Sharing and Analysis Centre.
Authorities have sounded alerts. The US homeland security department said it was monitoring events but would not issue a formal warning because it did not know if the threat was serious. ? AFP
