High Speed Wireless Internet

Does anyone here subscribe to the high speed wireless internet services offered by cell phone companies like Verizon, alltel, etc?

They have been advertising a lot locally, and it seems to be pretty convenient. $90/mo for high speed anywhere I go with my laptop.

what are your opinions on these services?

we're obviously not talking about T1 speeds here.

At a local expo, one of the providers used dslreports to show me his speed was about 314k... and that was in the middle of a large building where was own cell reception sucked....

I imagine in the wide open it would be better

314k? damb if they got it up to that I say go for it.

Sharky 07-05-2003 05:26 PM

That is my thoughts.

I'm just curious if anyone has any experience with the reliablity of the networks...

Pornwolf 07-05-2003 05:33 PM

Verizon is ok. I connect to a wireless hotspot that uses Verizon and I get around 500kbs down with it. With my own home Roadrunner wireless hookup I get up to 2mbs down and 367kbs up.

I heard Verizon is going to outfit all of their local payphones with wireless connections so you can go to many different places and connect. It should be cool.

Sharky 07-05-2003 05:47 PM

not bad.

what is your upload like?

Pornwolf 07-05-2003 05:52 PM

It was two way 1.5mb DSL so it was similar.

Sharky 07-05-2003 05:58 PM

not bad.

are you only able to access at certain hotspots like starbucks or Borders?

I'm looking for a service where I can access anywhere there is a cell signal.. like the car.. or a clients office for instance:-)

Timbo 07-05-2003 06:03 PM

Shark.

High speed here is out of the question from what I have seen. I have it, speed reads about 300k. Bullshit.

56k if you are lucky.

fris 07-05-2003 06:06 PM

you need wireless internet so you can keep posting on gfy dont you?

Sharky 07-05-2003 06:06 PM

Hey Timbo!

You use it on your laptop?

lol. yeah. that's the main reason I want it. wouldn't you pay solely to post on GFY?

Timbo 07-05-2003 06:10 PM

Yeah laptop for traveling.

Sprint is the provider.

Juicy D. Links 07-05-2003 06:12 PM

Starbucks use the T Mobile network i believe

Sharky 07-05-2003 06:12 PM

do you still consider it worth the $$?

is it nationwide service?

Pornwolf 07-05-2003 06:31 PM

Oh, you're looking for that kinda high speed. Well, good luck getting 56k. You are better off just using a PC-mobile-modem card and dialing in to AOL.

Verizon, at least here in NY is expected to have a hotspot on just about every corner. It's the same plan in other cities as well. It's better IMHO to sign up with T-Mobile or Verizon to take advantage of the various hotspots.

Juicy D. Links 07-05-2003 06:33 PM

I have a hotspot in my bedroom

I heard you had to get that because of your shorter than normal ethernet cord. :winkwink:

Hooper 07-05-2003 07:14 PM

Sharky, i replied to this elsewhere.. but it's important to make the distinction, there are two kinds of wireless.

1) the kind that starbucks, tmobile, etc..etc.. have.. where they have "hotspots" that are live super highspeed 802.11b/a/g providers.

2) the kind provided by sprint/verizon etc..etc.. where you get a card that truly works *ANYWHERE* that there is cell phone service available. I'm in boston and have a good solid equivalent to 56k dialup... usually more like 28.8 or 14.4 dialup.

Not true. I have wireless and get consistent 1.5 MB download and upload. Probably the most reliable service I've ever had.

Sharky 07-05-2003 09:12 PM

Thanks hooper.

lol.. Looks like the 802.11b is what I was expecting to be able to use anywhere. I guess that's not the case. Too bad.

I have a modem that hooks to my cell phone. slower than shit connection speeds for sure.. so slow, I haven't used it in 6 months.

lol

Are you in the US? Is your wireless one of those where you can take your laptop to any room in your house and connect to the internet without wires through your cable/dsl modem?? Or can you get on a plane and go across the country then open your laptop up and connect at 1.5MB without wires?????

kmanrox 07-05-2003 11:22 PM

we get 114kbps here in bangkok for like 50$ a month

Choker 07-06-2003 12:22 AM

I use Verizon mobile. For $99 a month I get unlimited data transfer, it says 144k but sometimes I can get 225K. It's pretty cool you just basically plug a usb cable into your phone to the computer. I use it on a laptop, as well as my pc's for backup when cable goes down.
