Louisiana man charged with breaking into home of man who outbid him online


POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) Police said a Louisiana man broke into the home of a man who outbid him in an Internet auction and threatened his wife with a handgun Thursday.

Gerald Newburger Jr., 44, of New Orleans, was charged with first-degree burglary, a felony, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.

Police said Newburger was mad about being outbid for used band costumes, worth less than $500, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported in Friday editions.

Newburger hoped to coerce the man into giving him the costumes, police said. Officers were unsure when the auction concluded.

Police said Newburger broke into the home 70 miles north of New York City around noon, and threatened the man's wife with a handgun before leaving in a taxi. No one was injured.

An officer pulled over the taxi minutes later, police said.

Newburger was arraigned in town court and sent to Dutchess County Jail on $100,000 bail.

Crazy people are crazy people. It has nothing to do with EBay, really. In any era, this guy would have managed to find a cause to flip out.

Geez, I've been mad enough to send people an e-mail for outbidding me (usually asking nicely for them to sell me the item at a higher price than they paid because stupid me missed the end of an auction for something really rare that I wanted ALOT) but I don't think anything would ever mean enough to me to do something like THAT! I do get really pissed when I miss the end of an auction or I get sniped at the last possible second and don't have time to raise my bid, though. I just don't get THAT mad! Yikes!

I wasn't blaming Ebay..it is just the tool through which his insanity was expressed. Still, it is an unusual way.
