Online retailing giant Amazon is being sued by a digital image company called Corbis, which alleges that it processed unauthorised sales of hundreds of celebrity pictures via its website.

Corbis is seeking damages of up to $150,000 for each work sold through Amazon, which is being held responsible for the sales, although the infringements were the work of some of the 'trusted partners' that feature on its website.

The online photo library claims that Amazon is responsible for ensuring its partners are not doing anything untoward, particulary 'trusted' partners. Amazon countered with the claim that it is not liable as it never owned any inventory and is thus exempt from prosecution.

Amazon has acted quickly to remove those trusted partners involved in the suspected copyright breach from its website. Some 25 poster retailers were named in the lawsuit, along with Amazon.

Corbis was established 14 years ago by Microsoft's Bill Gates and subsequently inked deals with numerous commerical photographers to acquire millions of image rights.
