gfy's fucking around discussion board is getting a bit big - idea?
 

just a sugestion - but maybe it's time to have a couple of splinter options as the main board is gettig a bit big...

now I'm not saying to decrese the main board at all... do't get me wrong.......

but I am saying to get a little more topic sensitive - say 2 or three options (nothing huge)........with all posted as well to the main board.


everything still gets posted to the main board - but also to a topic sensitive option... you can reply from either option but by flitering a bit it may be easier to follow threads that interest you......

eg: option like business related induftry news and non-business related......


Soooo you post to the main board and I'm asked when I post my thread which topic I want my thread posted on. it will go on the main thread but it can also be posted on a topic sensitive thread. that way if I want to read about only threads relating to business I can do so without seeing the latest movie review and if I want to read about everything I can as well. if I just want to read about movie reviews or someone's non-industry related weekened adverntures I can focus on on exactly that...

the board nees to be upgraded to vBulletin 3.0 which has lots of different options that would enhance the networking/communication experience here.

I think the traffic trade and gallery requests should be split into two separate forums.

I can imagine that during peak hours the server is having trouble enough, more complex features would slow things down.

It's still in beta.

GFY is the biggest adult forum no?..... there are currently only 4 fourms off the main menu. The 3 other than "fucking around...." get a very small fraction of the posts.

I think the main REASON that got so big is because of the fact that there aren't 40 different forum topics to dillute the community.

Good idea. But unfortunately it's not yours to take. So you should just forget about it....

On another note...

Sleazy I think you should change your site layout because:

A) Your current layout puts you at (possible) risk for 2257 related incidents.

B) Your current layout isn't as good for advertisers when you compare it to something like "The Hun" who's simple link list is always easy to identify the ranking/listing order of "the top spots". Also with your ads being exposed for 5 days on the main page & then a year in the archive... woohoo.

You should really switch to that layout :glugglug

After re-reading, What you are suggesting IS a cool idea

- to be able to select ADDITIONAL forums that your post is mirrored to.

But my arguement still applies. Your suggestion would require adding new forums.

The "hun" analogy was just to show you there are lots of ideas that are sometimes better for different people, but if it's going to potentially fuck with the bottom line -- your traffic -- then you better thing long and hard about making changes.

I'd guess that probably 50% of the people here would too.

It's is a great idea in concept. I would even be on the side that would vote to use it :)

But over the long run, more forums will = less new traffic I think.

When the GFY newbies come to the main page, they would be confronted with more boards and a dilluted post base.

Ie if Sleazy & Pornkings (and whoever else wants to 'get serious' at times) decide to go hang out in the new 'industry news only' or 'serious business only' sections for the day... then them posting there instead of to the main forum will make the main forum smaller that day, and make the entire site seem just a little tiny bit smaller.

Now multiply that kind of 'main forum traffic loss' by however many new forums you want to add and you have the first-time GFY users seeing a completely different board.

Right now they come here & are like "1.5 million posts?! Wow! I'm hanging out here. This place is a zoo!"

If you notice, some of the other forums aren't really all that far behind. (I got a chance to look around at other forums during the downtime the other day :()

It almost is broke though. You put a post looking for something and it slides into obscurity before anyone gets a chance to see it. I know we all have shit to say but we also want other people to see it no?

Could this be just a seasonal problem though, with school kids out and all?

Well even topic tagging / filtering wont stop that... unless the people with off-topic things to say willingly use it too.

Or unless you give mini-moderators the right to tag & lock (the tag) on the post as [x] fucking around vs. [ ] Serious Business or whatever.

For example the first thing that comes to mind is.. I'm not sure that anyone will be able to stop juicylinks blowing his load on any topic, no matter how serious it is. :)

It would be a cool feature though if it wouldn't add too much to the server load.

Still, there is often good bits of information branched off from forums that start out as pure bullshit.
