Someone explain this Alexa thing to me

Someone explain this Alexa traffic ranking to me. How do they calculate it? I have been looking over my numbers this morning and they are unreal. If it's all accurate i'm in shock here at the way the site is growing

Alexa = bullshit, when I checked alexa a week or 2 ago thumbzilla had more traffic than the hun :1orglaugh

I certainly hear a lot about it for it to be complete BS

It depends. Sometimes it can be "accurate" for some sites, other times, it's not.

Rumor has it if the webmaster installs Alexa on their browser (which is spyware, btw)-- It increases your Alexa rating. I don't know if it's true or not.

well I don't have the alexa toolbar thank god. I don't need anymore friggin spyware to download on my computer. I've got something evidently that nothing's catching when it scans because everytime I turn my computer on I have new shit on my desktop of casino this xxx that.

I hope Alexa is accurate if it is my rankings are rocking and rolling!

It tracks where surfers go and creates a top list from it. It is known to be biased towards the companies associated with it and many other things. One example is that only certain types of surfers will ever install a third party toolbar. Another example is if you are the sole visitor to your homepage, and you have an Alexa toolbar installed, then you are representing more than just one Internet surfer; you are representing the amount of Alexa toolbar users divided by the amount of surfers on the net. This means your hompage will be ranked higher than normal. This is why the rankings are only accurate for sites ranked 100,000th and below, due to greater volume of traffic and thus greater accurate of ranking.

I think GFY and webmaster sites in general will be ranked higher than they should, as webmasters are not "normal" surfers, and thus are much more likely to install the toobar, to receive stats on other webmaster's sites, just like I have.

This is very true.
