MPEG or WMV? movie galleries
 

Hey guys & girls.

We are designing 100+ of them for our new program and wondering what everyone wants movie galleries to be?

I've been noticing A LOT of problems on my 4-5 machines here in the office playing mpeg movies, IE6 seems to keep crashing all the time when we try to view qmov.com mpegs or even braincash.com's galleries or anybodies, if i view them in windows media streaming it just crashes IE6 or windows media.

Our current galleries we are using are in wmv, fit twice the video in the movie for the same size. Load faster for visitors. And work perfectly on all our machines.

If we designed our galleries in all WMV files, would that turn any of you away from using them on movie posts? Do you REALLY need mpeg or would WMV being the new standard be ok?

WMV after all works on 95% of machines and it auto downloads from microsoft the latest codec if needed.

I just hate the idea that 1000's of people would have there browsers crashing from these mpeg movies. We have winxp fresh installs that are crashing from trying to stream mpegs and fresh win2000 installs doing the same, downloading and playing them is fine but not streaming. Do any of you have the same troubles?

Btw our WMV movie galleries are converting like a mother! So they can't be bad, but hey were here to do what everyone wants so any input would be great :)

good luck bro. If there is one thing that webmasters can't agree on it's what fucking format they want.

I'm a diehard WMV user myself.

At first we did wmv, then they (our affiliates) wanted mpeg, then some wanted quicktime. It's hard man, everyone wants something different. But in the end provide as mush as you can because those people are going to help you in the end... know what I mean.

It's irony on a base level, but I like it. :1orglaugh

I've been using wmv's before wmv's were cool. :) A year ago everyone bashed them, but not any more.

There are a few old school diehards that still think mpegs are "it" but who gives a fuck? WMV is yesteryears MPEG. :)

BTW, no one complains about my galleries and I encoded them all in WMV.

Surfers hate WMV movies.

We use both and mpeg = far more sign ups.

WMV is a better format, but our experience shows that 240x180 mpegs yeild much better results on free galleries.

Offer WMV at three options

- 56k
- 100k
- 340k (or more)

At our experience this is the smartest way and will not give any big problem to the users as close to anybody can watch them.

Dumb question... mpegs

Go with Mpegs
1) some surfers are too stupid to realize they only play on windows media player, or are using an apple or dont have their config setup right.
2) .wmv's start with a delay and they take too long to advance ahead.

Either way is cool though...

your 4-5 machines are probably editing boxes or have some sort of editing software that fucks up your mpeg decoder that's why you can't stream mpegs. surfers play them fine.
