oh, you read that somewhere? everyone I know that has DSL has complained about regular downtime. SBC I believe.

an entire month!?! gee.

I go well over a year at a time, between downtime, and only for a matter of minutes when it happens

I have cable now, had DSL for a long time. They are both good but DSL seems a lot more stable. DSL is a lot more screwing around to get set up though.

wargames 06-27-2003 12:21 AM

you messed up bro. Dsl sucks balls

iroc409 06-27-2003 12:33 AM

the only reason i don't like dsl is the speed and the provider. for a little over 6 months now i've had very little downtime. when i first got it there were a few times when the techs were messing with the line and i had a few drops, and another time where some large pipes went down in the region. but, all of this probably adds up to no more than an hour.

my cable setup.. although very fast (and the business line was very cool), i had a lot of downtime. it would regularly go out, often for more than 30 minutes at a time. this often happened every few days or so. it was pretty disturbing, especially since i ran server off of this. the cable company knew of this, but they couldn't keep the lines up. it's also a lot cheaper with dsl to get static ips (you don't have to get a $100+ bus. line.. just an extra $10/mo).

so all in all, it's a trade off, reliability or speed.

Za Ha 06-27-2003 10:57 AM

So far its good. My cable providor Rogers was like a fuckin rollercoaster UP AND DOWN all the time!!

playa 06-27-2003 11:11 AM

DSL is just so sensitive line,

also if you don't have lot of neighbors using cable service then you could use up the whole pipe for yourself.

Also a cable man told me a little trick to remove a filter and now i can get basic cable service for free

Brown Bear 06-27-2003 11:18 AM

I've had both cable and DSL for the past 4 years now, and I've found speeds to be faster on cable and I've never once had downtime on cable but have had multiple downtimes on DSL.

Herb Kornfield 06-27-2003 11:41 AM

Had ADSL which sucked balls from Verizon until I got a cable modem 2 years ago.

Only a few minutes of downtime in 2 years. Most of the neighbors here are on the AOL tip.

Thank god for suburbanites that think AOL is the internet and never get the cable and slow this down here.

FATPad 06-27-2003 11:44 AM

SBC DSL for a year and a half now. No downtime at all, and my speed is extremely consistent.

It probably depends on your service. I've had DSL at two different places, and cable at several... I've had many more problems with DSL than cable... and cable has always been a whole lot faster.

baddog 06-28-2003 01:02 AM

It's all about fiber optics. You can't get DSL on fiber, but you could be lucky enough (like me) to get cable on glass.

Sure beats the hell out of copper.

crescentx 06-28-2003 02:38 AM

In my experiences - Time Warner and Adelphia - cable seemed like it was run by drunk AOL users. Fast when it worked briefly, down a lot, eventually was like a fast dialup connection. DSL through a local ISP has been lots more reliable, one outage in two years. Corporate ISPs seem to suck.

Cable in vegas is down almost every day for some time.

Pain in the ass when you need it for work.

But, no DSL out in the boonies of henderson where I live.

boo hoo.

I hear bad things about DSL out here tho.

sexyclicks 06-28-2003 02:52 PM

I have cable but recently I decided to go with bell and put satelite/DSL
So I make the order and stuff and today I receive my modem (that I bought) in the mail.
I open the box and there was the dsl modem PLUS a letter from another guy saying "blah blah I decided to quit your service and I am sending you back the modem, cables and shit". So these fucks they shipped a used modem instead of a new one but they are so stupid that they forgot the other guy's letter inside...

so i'm back with cable :BangBang: bell canada

liquidmoe 06-28-2003 02:53 PM

Had a few minor downtimes with both DSL and Cable but overall I much more prefer cable. Speeds are much faster and the service really is comparably similar, well besides the speed.

Ironhorse 06-28-2003 02:54 PM

I had regular downtime with SBC DSL, I have soem downtime with -now- Comcast but overall DSL was worse and alot more regualar

Centurion 06-28-2003 02:59 PM

I tried a cable modem. But didn't like the cap on my upload speed of 256k.

When I've got a lot of stuff to upload, I want the speed, and get that with my dsl connection, 1.5 down 768 up. And not ONCE has it been down for me as opposed to the slowdowns I hear the cable people suffering, especially during primetime because so many people share the same cable pipe in the neighborhood.

Not to mention if you have hi definition tv..you are sharing your signal with 2 units (modem & tv), thus reducing the overall input for both.
