also - its hard to say who is the best. There are differencies between techniques/styles of each top quitar players. For example Gilmour from Pink Floyd is no top tech. player but his sound and touch of melody is execellent.
My the most favourite is Pat Metheny :thumbsup |

Pat Metheny is definitely one of the most noted guitarists of all time for his type of music, most definitely.

another great player was Alex Skolnick . Really fast and clear player from earlier days of Testament !

There are alot of them out there to pick the best since there are so many styles of playing.
For me personally, I love to listen to hendrix's live recordings. The man was just a genius for what he did with the tools that he had available at that time. But, I also listen to many other styles of music as well where the guitar isnt in the front and its just as funky If you are a guitarist, check out as many people as you can and learn the riffs that catch your ear, they will all come back out in YOUR playing. |
Manny Charlton (Nazareth) is worth a mention.
How about Nancy Wilson of Heart? Saw them in '81 at an outdoor fest, she was awesome. |

With out a doubt, Stevie Ray Vaughn was the best ever.

I'm going to add Rik Emmett from Triumph. That dude can play.
|
For technique:
Steve Morse Eric Johnson Paul Gilbert For Feeling: Brian May Stevie Ray Vaughn For volume: Ted Nugent......The loudest fucking guitar player I have ever heard. 200 feet back you can hear his stage amps over the PA system. |
Eddie Van Halen
Tommy Morello |
There a quite a few you don't have on your list.
I do think becker was better than friedman. Maybe alan holdsworth - sick fucker. |

Stevie also liked to order smoothies from the restaurant inside of whole foods where i worked....He is an icon in the Austin history. :thumbsup |

Does this include 'Air Guitar' ?
|
takin slash all the way too
|
Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits
Eric Clapton Stevie Ray Vaughn BB King Muddy Waters John Lee Hooker Jimmy Page from Zeppelin Santana Bonnie Raitt the edge from U2 (his early stuff before they turned into pop stars) |
The blues.... gotta be BB King.
More noted rockers.... Alex Lifeson (Rush) Wanna talk loud? Pete Townshend. Tommy Shaw (Styx, Damn Yankees) |
i don't see andres segovia or christopher parkening on this thread, but they should be here. segovia was one of the grand old men of classical guitar, and i remember hearing christopher parkening in concert when i was a teenager and being inspired beyond measure even though at the time i hated classical anything - but he went beyond all that.
i love watching michaelangelo play - i have an instructional video of his (of all things) and it's a crack up to watch. my friends watch him and say "that's done by fast forwarding the video" *LOL* that mutha is FAST! if you live in l.a., alan holdsworth does occasional free in store performances at carvin on sunset blvd. if you love hard crunchy guitar, pat lachman from deiselmachine and halford is pretty fucking good http://aramis.dieselmachine.net/main.html |
SRV, santana, hendix, lindsey buckingham(very fast fingers, no pick:) and Eddie van halen are up on my list
:glugglug |
What about Prince?
And Eric Clapton? :thumbsup |
You can go into every town in America and find guys who can play like there is no tomorrow.
There is no best guitar player but a lot of greats Hitinface |
I'll add Al Dimeola to the list.
Stevie Ray Vaughn sounds like he sat in his room playing to Hendrix all day and all night when he was a kid. |
Eric Johnson
Tim Reynolds |
George Thorogood carved out his own niche, certainly deserves a mention here.
Joe Walsh Joe Perry |
