Micro$oft taking aim at Google?

http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104_2-1020731.html

Quote:

Microsoft's path to expand the Windows empire is leading directly to search king Google.

The software company this month quietly launched a new search program called MSNBot, which scours the Web to build an index of HTML links and documents. The homegrown system--which performs robot functions previously left to Inktomi and other partners--may pose a significant threat to Google if Microsoft fulfills its promise to make the program a cornerstone of its overall PC and services strategies.
Interesting.

AdultNex 06-25-2003 04:07 PM

It's going to be very interesting whenever MSNBot launches.

Now whoever owns msnbot.com is going to get an ass-kicking.

LeeNoga 06-25-2003 04:08 PM

SO what are you saying, buy more stock in MicroSoft? :-)

loverboy 06-25-2003 04:09 PM

ok, now who's next at Microsoft lists? I bet Bill Gates is working his way in at GFY. lol

Matt 26z 06-25-2003 04:15 PM

This is going to end up being a modern day MSIE vs. Netscape.

Google is in deep shit. You can't compete against a company with unlimited development funds. This is assuming MS is serious about this.

- AFN - 06-25-2003 04:17 PM

heh whoever owns msnbot will prob get sued for it and lose it anyway :)

socalcash 06-25-2003 04:20 PM

Thats actually not true..

Most domain disputes are going the way of the defendants.

Fletch XXX 06-25-2003 04:20 PM

Google is in trouble.

SexxxyChat-T 06-25-2003 05:03 PM

I would say that Google is in trouble... but don't overlook the fact that M$ is only in it for the money and the surfers are in it for relevant results.

My guess is that any new MS engine will fail miserably due to the fact that they will spam their SERPs full of paid listings to make a quick buck, and dilute the quality of results... I mean hell, thats what they do now.

Seems to me they are just looking for a replacement to the Inktomi backfill they currently use.
But if hell freezes over and MS creates a Google-like engine, Google's ass is in the fryer, hard to compete when the automatic homepage of every new windows machine is your competitor.

High Quality 06-25-2003 05:08 PM

I can't belive what i'm reading. People actually defending google.

Ha.

Well I for one welcome competition to google, as competition in any circle raises the quality of the end products.

Yes, I've seen "Pirates of Silicon Valley" too guys, and yes, I hate bill. So what, go micro$oft.

FlyingIguana 06-25-2003 05:29 PM

google will most likely get their ipo out the door a bit sooner if they need to compete with microsoft. a google ipo could be the kick in the ass the ipo market needs right now. hopefully this speeds up the process for google.

It's not about the money for development so much as the means of distribution. Microsoft controls the operating system of most PC users, so they can destroy other companies by including products that other people sell separately.

Imagine if Microsoft started including virus scanning software with Windows, which they have talked about doing. The anti-virus companies would be severely hurt.

Somehow, MS will probably try to figure out a way to make their search work in a way that is so easy for most people to use that they won't bother going to another search company.

sacX 06-25-2003 05:41 PM

I'll believe a Google IPO when I see it.. They don't appear to me have a dire need for capital and why if you currently owned google would you want to dilute that ownership..

Gary 06-25-2003 05:45 PM

well, they tried to compete with aol, with their msn crap, but that didnt work too well. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. Everyone, and i mean every single person i know who searches for crap on the web uses google and finds it to be the best engine out there. google has alot of loyalty from users because it works

Agreed.

SandraB 06-25-2003 06:05 PM

I believe that Google already has been beaten by www.alltheweb.com which IMHO serves the more acurate and current results.

MS will probably never be a leader in the SE category unless they buy some of the real Players on this market.

They probably have to reebot every other hour and install patches all day long which will place them last in line!

Just my :2 cents:

SandraB 06-25-2003 07:03 PM

Did any of you get visited by the MSN Bot
MSNBOT/0.1 (http://search.msn.com/msnbot.htm)

i still use yahoo :thumbsup

its basically the same as google for search results

Pornwolf 06-25-2003 07:16 PM

95% of the people on the web still have no idea what Google is. Actually they rarely type full URL's into the address bar. We are a little ahead of the curve so Google will always have a techie contingent supporting them but the rest of the world will belong to Bill.

You might be right on this ... but I hope not. Thinking about the future!

Rochard 06-25-2003 10:13 PM

Say what you want about Microsoft, Windows, and Bill Gates. But he is one smart fucker.

You all bitch about Windows, but face it, Windows is the best. It's really the only OS that the general public can use. In case any of you haven't figured it out, it's because of Windows that we are able to sell porn.

Microsoft gave away IE, and now it's the most used tool to surf the Internet.

MSN - if I remember my stats correctly - and the second most used ISP.

If Microsoft attempts to create it's own search engine, there is no doubt in my mind they will dominate it.

Triple 6 06-25-2003 10:34 PM

the ONLY way MS can take out google (theoretically) in the SE dpt. is by making sure they innovate or at least duplicate Google's 'simplicity'.

darnit 06-25-2003 10:39 PM

SandraB 06-26-2003 03:56 PM

Certainly giving a lot of results in Google...

chshkt 06-26-2003 04:17 PM

google rules
and their new beta toolbar rules

nothing's wrong with that that ms will make search engine
it will be made with huge amounts of $ and hopefully it will be good

FlyingIguana 06-26-2003 04:18 PM

wonder if microsoft will buy up a smaller search engine

TheJimmy 06-26-2003 05:05 PM

MS is the D-ev-Eeeel

:winkwink:

Pipecrew 06-26-2003 05:25 PM

msnbot.com goes to a full page for ifriends haha

chodadog 06-26-2003 05:30 PM

This search engine will dominate, eventually. Google very well may remain the best search engine, but MSN Bot will undoubtedly have more users. Microsoft have an unparalleled reach to surfers.

iroc409 06-26-2003 05:37 PM

hmm... google pulled one of my pages. it no longer goes to the index of the search, and now the same results are pointing to a different webpage (on the same site). interesting, i guess it's because of porn. argh.
