I can tell you it is definitely real. I am very anti-over-medication to the point where I don't even take pills for headaches or medicine for a cold unless it gets so bad that I have no choice but I am seriously considering seeing a doctor about my problems with concentration and focus.

I need some Focusin.

I'm certain ADD for adults exists, currently my bf is being treated for add. problems that aren't fixed in childhood tend to carry on to adulthood, wouldn't you say???

psyko514 06-24-2003 10:44 PM

i have it.

Ketadream 06-24-2003 11:14 PM

Ummm yea....

Fairly common at least in my..

Greg B 06-24-2003 11:39 PM

Just don't get hooked on ritalin or prozac or any of them pseudo drugs the doctors give you for ADD

From what I hear, ADD is diet related in reality. Go see a real pro-level nutritionalist

Why 06-24-2003 11:44 PM

yea i think i got it. up untill i found a computer, couldnt pay attention to anything for longer then a couple hours. once i got a computer i can stay on it for very long periods, but i loose track of what im doing and always get off task.

GeXus 06-24-2003 11:47 PM

Everyone and there mother has ADD these days.. I remember being in school and in every class at least 5 or so students would have to leave to take there "pills". Its bullshit, Everyone is diognosed with ADD because they cant pay attention, but who the hell can pay attention in public school these days, its just plain boring.

Basher 06-24-2003 11:50 PM

"BOLLOCKS!!!" sorry thats not my view I suffer from Tourette syndrome

Trixie 06-25-2003 12:13 AM

I have ADD -- and taking Ritalin proved it. Sorry to all of you doubters, but if someone can take speed (which is all ritalin is -- an amphetamine) and go take a nap . . . I think there's something different about our brains.

I don't believe that diet crap at all. And just because something is overdiagnosed doesn't mean it's not real for some people.

ADD is classified with seizure disorders (epilepsy, narcolepsy, etc.) -- kind of interesting when you think of it that way.

I think overdiagnosis is a problem but of course there is a difference between someone who is lazy or just doesn't want to put in the effort and someone who can't. My problem is not that I don't want to concentrate, I literally can't. That commercial had the best comparison I have ever heard: "It's like someone keeps changing the channel in your head." I also suffer from extreme insomnia which I think is related. The only way I ever get to sleep is to stay up until I am fantastically tired which is why it is not unusual for me to be up for 36 hours straight. Today, for instance, I went to sleep around 1:00PM and got up around 6:00PM. I won't be able to go back to sleep until at least 1:00PM tomorrow. The biggest contributor to the sleep problem for me is not being able to shut my brain off. No matter how hard I try to relax or calm down my thoughts they race around and keep me awake.

My problems sleeping are horrible. Anyone who knows me personally has seen it for themselves. A couple of weeks ago I was waking up at 11:00 PM and going to bed at 4-6:00PM, now I am waking up at 6-7:00PM and going to bed at 1-2:00PM. Next week I might be getting up at 6:00AM, again. It's a real problem.

I forgot what I was gonna say...

madps 06-25-2003 01:17 AM

I was gonna say something, but I can't remember what it was:(

Trixie 06-28-2003 02:31 PM

Hey SpaceAce -- hope you get some help. That "changing the channel" analogy *is* a good one definitely.

I have noticed that aside from Ritalin getting regular exercise is a help. In some ways I think it makes me more hyper but more in a regulated sort of way (hard to explain). It might also help you sleep better if you get more exercise (if you aren't already). I have heard that insomnia is a common problem with people who are ADD. Fortunately I don't have that problem ;)

Working late isn't doing any good. ADD can be one of the effects.

Beastiepoo 06-28-2003 04:11 PM

Hey, I thought this thread was going to be about Adult Advanced Dungeons and Dragons!!! I'm sure I should be allowed the opportunity to create an AD&D character that is FINALLY allowed to have sex with the other players in game while fighting off orcs...or something.
