Good Designers Copy, Great Designers Steal

Great article over at SitePoint.com. Would love to hear what anyone here who takes the time to read it thinks.

Pablo Picasso, the first living artist to be featured in the Louvre, influenced the artistic world in a uniquely original way. So why is he known for saying ?Good artists copy, great artists steal??

Good article. All designers get their inspiration from other designs. I doubt if anything truly original has been done in quite a long time. Unfortunately I think too many designers take the word 'copy' too literally and actually copy someone else's design and then change the text a little.

The downside to being creative is that the uncreative eat off your plate.

Very few webmasters sit down and try to create something 100% original. Even the current standard paysite designs are all re-works of one another.

The biggest obsticle of attempting something original is that you can't just sit down and start working from start to finish. Nobody is going to think up brand new ideas at that rate. You spend more time away from the computer just thinking than you do actually working on it.

It can take months to complete a unique site that is actually good because of the thought process and trial and error that must go into it. Anyone cranking out sites quickly is making sites that either a) suck, or b) have a very similar overall design to another site.

It's out there. The owners just have enough sense to keep it off the boards, and away from other webmasters in general.

Huh? If it's on the Internet webmasters will find it.

But I still stand by my original statement and when I said quite a while I meant years and years. When you see something and say to yourself "now there's something original" I'd be willing to bet you that in every case it isn't truly original.

For example: Was 'Girls Gone Wild' an original idea? Of course not. He just video taped stuff that people have been doing for years at Mardi Gras and spring breaks. Flashing tits and doing crazy shit. The only person you could credit with having the original idea would be the first woman in history that ever flashed her tits at someone. Probably happened thousands of years ago too.

I don't take "stealing" as a word of itself. It's more of "inspiration"-- That great designers take to produce a website.

Stealing is more of the sites like on: pirated-sites.com

LOL they stole that quote from a poet, I've forgotten the guys name.

What about the first huge cock site? I am pretty sure it was MassiveCocks.Com. Was that considered an original idea?

Ironhorse 06-27-2003 04:38 AM

I think the article didn't cover blatantly copying and pasting code or cloned design. They admitted to borrowing concepts from other sites but the end result looks quite different from the original.

Obviously by using the 3 button special : Members, Instant Access and Free Preview you already are copying someone else's work. For that matter so is using the alphabet.

Anyway I think a possible explanation for what Picasso might have meant is that a good artist can copy another's work but it takes a great artist to copy another's work and improve it in such a way or give it life beyond the original and thus 'stealing' the artwork. Does this make any sense?
