Old compute to new computer...transering files

Dagnabbit! I've got an old Tecra laptop with 95 on it and I need to transfer files to new laptop with XP.

I attach cables, do the file sharing thingie and no go.

Any tips?

I bought a USB external HD for transferring/backups.

They're mad cheap (like $150 after rebait).

Ive found this to be more pratical than simply using a cable/program to transfer the files, because this will also back them up on a safe location.

Good program developed locally here: handybackup.

http://www.handybackup.com

I use it all the time to transfer data between different comps.
E-mail, ICQ, registry data, single files and directories.
Easy to use. Try it.

Thanks gang.

I was just looking for a way to transfer files easily from one puter to the next. Did it before and haven't had to do it in years so now I've gotta retrain myself.

It's either that or one zip disk at a time via an old parallel port ( old computers...)

If you have a router, connect both computers it and run a FTP server on your new computer. Have the laptop connect to it and transfer all the files you want.

Be sure to have the laptop connect to the internal IP assigned by the router.

With 802.11b, I transferred files internally at 600KB/sec.

I just had my friend build me a kick-ass system and I'm now in the same boat as you are, having to transfer and share files.

My girlfriend (TurboAngel) got my old system set up right next to me. Thank God my new neighbor is a network guy or else it would have taken me forever to get the network set up properly myself.

It's been a few days now and I'm still setting up everything on my new system here. I'm sure it will be a few more still.

Sometimes 95 doesn't work well with USB devices. (not to mention that fact that most PC's that old didn't have USB ports at all)

I've had to use the parallel port ZIP drive method in the past myself. Pain in the ass.
