                                                                                                      Giving out passwords, hotlinking, offering copyrighted material to those who SHOULD be paying to see it... those things are wrong. It's not JUST about giving out passwords. I went to see what the fuss was about and I saw one of your users had posted DOZENS of pictures (possibly hundreds, I didn't go to every single thread by him because I didn't want to contribute to the bandwidth problem) all hotlinked from someone's domain. I seriously doubt this user had license to post those images, which takes money away from the producer who took the pictures. And I doubt that it was HIS hosting since he didn't bother to put up any advertising, and who wants to give out free pictures to a bunch of leeches for FREE? This one user of your form may end up costing this webmaster hundreds of dollars in bandwidth, and perhaps he cannot afford it. What if he loses his hosting because of the bullshit one of your users pulled? Maybe you don't care, but the guy might have a family he's trying to feed with the income from his site.

                                                                                                      I know you're angry about everything that's going on, and I guess I would be, too, but your users are stealing from alot of hard-working people, some of who can afford the loss, some who probably cannot. All you really need to do is police the board better and see to it that theft is not allowed any longer. You might lose alot of your users, but what do you want a bunch of leeches and theives hanging around your site for, anyway? They're not going to make you any money. Your site deserves to make money just like anyone else's, AS LONG AS you play by the rules and ensure that your forum users do, too.

                                                                                                                                                                                      Take the site down, the hotlinking stops. At least until it starts happening at another board. Take that one down and so on, and the cycle slows down some.

                                                                                                                                                                                      Every single site that has stolen passwords, stolen content, stolen bandwidth... they ALL affect the industry. It's not just ONE, it's THOUSANDS. Taking down one helps a little. If none were ever taken down there would be a whole hell of alot more of them around today doing damage. Every single one that can be eliminated makes a difference.

BUT - instead of the hours wasted trying to take down one site ... wouldn't it be easier just install the right software? If a newbie doesn't do this, it's their problem, not yours.
