Cables ... how do I see what is a crosslink and what's not? (Hardware nerds only)

I'm freakin gpuzzled with my new router, played for hours and now had to reconfig this old shit.

This was my setup:
1. main pc (host)
2. other pc (client)
3. DSL modem

host was linked to modem, client to host.

I had two cables for that, one from host to client, one from host to modem.

Now I have this router added to the mix.

There is no host or client anymore, just 2 pc's.

I plugged my modem in my router. My pc in my router. Now, I need one more cable. Will the old cable work, the one I had from host to client (crosslink)?

How do I see what cable is what?

most routers are smart enough to accept either type. Normally straight through are for connecting computers to a hub andcrossover cables are used for connecting hub to hub. How you can tell is simple

wire 1 white with orange stripe
wire 2 orange
wire 3 white with green stripe
wire 4 blue
wire 5 white with blue stripe
wire 6 green
wire 7 white with brown stripe
wire 8 brown

Straight through are same at both ends

1 = 1
2 = 2
3 = 3
6 = 6

Crossed over change from one end to the other

1 = 3
2 = 6

3 = 1
6 = 2

Pins 4,5,7,8 are not used

Hope this helps

compare both ends of the cable. The wire colors should be in the same order if it's a straight thru. Unless of course it's been spliced in the middle. Otherwise it's a crossover.

Does the router have a built in hub or switch? Then you'll need another straight cable.

Ice/Dale, thanks.

Fletch, I've been reading for ours, however, without specific provider manuals and no internet access to search specific problems I had, it gets kinda frustrating.

I don't know man, I'm a nono when it comes to these things. I called my local helper here, but he was on the Canary Islands/

If you mean if it has ports for other pc's, yes. 4 ports and a printerserver (which I wanted, but seems useless as it is for parallel ports, my printer is usb, lol).

It is a Sweex Printer server and broadband router. It was recommended by the ISP.

I'd go with a straight cable from the 2nd pc to the Router.

The crossover that you were using to go from the client to the host under the old setup "may" work. Depends upon how intelligent the new router is about auto sensing the cable.
