Harry Potter stolen?

I hear J.K. Rowling is suing a newspaper for leaking a bit of her new book.

Did anyone see that show on 60 Minutes where they showed that a woman in Colorado or somewhere wrote some kids books that had almost all the character's and names in them that are now in the Harry Potter Books?

The woman was a bit of an older hippie type and got really pissed off when she wrote another one of her books and all the publishers refused to publish it because they said that she was ripping off Rowlands.

She'd never heard of Rowlands and pointed out that her books have been out for years before H.P.

The show on 60 minutes basically did everything but call Rowlands a thief.

The woman sued Rowlands but I never heard anything after.

Anyone?

Just some stupid people trying to make obvious steps to get a piece of the pie.

... yeah sure ... much more like intelligent marketing, ey ??

... remember, pamīs video got stolen too ... ahhh for sure !!!

I don't think so Nex. The woman is about 50 years old and like I said she's kind of a reclusive hippie type. Writes her books and communes with the Earth kind of stuff.

After watching 60 Minutes I came away really believing Rowlands is a thief.

In other potter news..

A CANADIAN woman who purchased a copy of the fifth Harry Potter book at a Montreal store 10 days before its official release has rejected an offer of more than $5000 for its return to the publishers.

It always amazes me how greedy people can get.

1 Million HP books are already preordered. Rowling is the richest british women besides the Queen. and she starts sueing a newspaper for printing a part of a legaly bought copy? Is she getting off when seeing kids that have to stay up till 12am to storm the bookstores?

Sarah_Jayne 06-19-2003 08:29 AM

i thought I read she is actually richer than the queen as an individual now. As a wanna be writer I can't really say anything because I know full well it will have a twinge of envy to it.

Any newspaper that prints a spoiler and ruins it for kids needs serious bitch slapping.

steffie 06-19-2003 09:33 AM

We also pre ordered the book already. I am more excited than my kids LOL

The publisher is spending 3 million dollars for all the publicity/advertising for this book. By a newspeper printing a spoiler without permission, it degrades that promotion.

Just because she is the richest woman in Britian, it doesn't mean she's not entitled to the same legal and copyright protection as the rest of us....

kids are going to be reading 1000 page plus book. A newspaper splashes Harry Potter on the front and some will read that. Plus, you know that once a newspaper publishes it some idiot will say something on tv or radio. Just let the kids have fun. It is like there is a bunch of people wanting to run up to 3 year olds and tell them there isn't a santa.

Ian 06-20-2003 07:26 AM

Thanks Honeyslut. :) That's what I was looking for. I read the judgement but if I was the judge I would have found for Stouffer. Rowland's stuff is just too close to be coincidence.

Trixie 06-20-2003 10:58 AM

Damn! This is interesting!

In the articles linked it says that Stouffer fabricated evidence? What are they saying, that she didn't really write her books in '84 and just whipped them up recently?

Argh!! Now I wish I could watch that 60 minutes!!
