H.P Lovecraft´s - DAGON

I dont know how many horror fans we have in here tonight,
i just wanted to do some horror talk on GFY...

I rented the movie a month ago, and went straight to my laptop and bought it online after i finished it. I love the writings of H.P.Lovecraft (might be one of the few authors that really captures my attention and fascinates me) and the only guys that made killer adaptations of them are Brian Yuzna and Stuart Gordon ( Re-Animator - From Beyond)

The movie is basically based (from what i understand) in two of Lovecrafts short stories (The Shadow Over Innsmouth and, duh, Dagon) and is so nicely crafted, and has an incredible pace and atmosphere.. little touchs of humor and gore... is so sad that few people appreciatte this kind of movies. In here it came out on a Brazilian edition and a pain in the ass to find another copy, so i ordered on my usual dvd online store. Its so sad that this kind of movies arent released on a solid basis these days....

If you are a horror fan, you wont be dissapointed. :glugglug

H.P Love Craft is my god.

You dare pervert his name mentioning it here?

May Cthulu shoot a nut on your ancestor's...

MiLo 06-17-2003 09:37 PM

hahahah! excellent.

Worst things have been done in the name of H.P Lovecraft i guess. check the new video game! hahahah!

There was another one that i played when i was younger.... what was the name.....

SykkBoy 06-17-2003 09:38 PM

I was introduced to Lovecraft after watching "Re-Animator" based upon his story "Herbet West, Re-animator" and agree Gordon and Yuzna have done an amazing job with his work. I haven't seen "Dagon" yet, but have heard great things about it will have to add it to my NetFlix list :)

Wasn't John Carpenter attached to a "Shadow Over Innsmouth" project at one time? I seem to remember preliminary creature FX sketeches in Fangoria magazine several years ago.

Ketadream 06-17-2003 09:38 PM

I thought dagon was pretty good, did not follow the mythos to a T, but better than most of lovecrafts work converted to the screen

I dont see that Brian Yuzna and Brian Yuzna ever followed his writings to a t.. they translated them into really good movies with an orientation to it.

Did you liked In The Mouth of Madness?

Ketadream 06-17-2003 09:43 PM

Never saw mouth... allways meant to...

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 06-17-2003 09:49 PM

My favorite story is actually "Call of Cthulu"

along with "The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath"

"Vaguely it called upon glimpses of a far forgotten first youth, when wonder and pleasure lay in all the mystery of the days"

Keta you still have yet to message me about a design for your content gig:)

I remembered! Prisioner of Ice and Shadow of the Comet...

"In The Mouth of Madness" was ok. Still.. "Re-Animator", "From Beyond" and "Dagon" remain at the top of my list.

Sykk.. good thing that you will catch this flick =) I have no idea or never heard of John Carpenter taking over any other Lovecraft project. He did a good job with "In the Mouth..." but i would be definitely awesome if more movies were done based on this short stories....

Jamdin 06-17-2003 09:54 PM

Read the stories and skip the movie. Honestly, you would be better off.

SykkBoy 06-17-2003 09:57 PM

While "Re-Animator" was my first experience with Lovecraft's work (which sent me to the library in search of of his literary works), my favorite is "From Beyond"

Barbara Crampton was soooooo hot in that flick......

SykkBoy 06-17-2003 09:59 PM

Speaking of Lovecraft, the Lovecraft devotees will get a kick out of this one....another of my early bands was named Miskatonic Mutants ;-)))

Disagree. I love both the stories and the movies. Like it was mentioned, the movies are basically based on the short stories, they dont dissapoint and they entertain.

Ive been reading his work for years and i am a horror movie fan.
Especially if the movies are done by Lovecraft fans, i am happy.

And yes Sykk.. damn! Barbara is foxy in Re-Animator! grab a copy of the Millenium Edition ASAP! =)

Fletch XXX 06-17-2003 10:07 PM

Anyone ever read any of the Hellboy comics? Very Lovecraft influenced.
The Hellboy movie is being filmed right now. Has Ron Perlman (Vincent from Beauty & The Beast tv show) as Hellboy and is directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Blade II, Mimic, Devil's Backbone).
The main bad creature in the movie looks a lot like a Lovecraft-inspired Minotaur. Should be cool.
Check it out at http://www.hellsite.com

MiLo 06-18-2003 12:17 AM

I am not a comic book fanatic, but ive heard of this movie. Having Del Toro directing it.. sounds like a promise. I actually loved what he did with Blade II, and he´s a rising director on the genre.

I am looking foward to that one too. :thumbsup :glugglug

El Espinazo del Diablo has its moments, is overall creepy, but what turned me kinda off is Federico Luppi´s performance. Sorry, but hes and argentinian actor, and somehow i found them to be stiff in front of a camera. Good movie anyway.

Argento is GOD! :glugglug

I'm eagerly awaiting the new Argento film too. There is a great interview with Argento on the "American Nightmare/Combat Shock" DVD from Troma with Loyd Kaufman.

I mainly check out http://www.joblo.com/arrow and JoBlo's horor forums for the latest flicks and new stuff I haven't seen

If you love Japanese horror, I highly recomend "Dark Water" (somewhat Ring-esque), "The Eye" and "Audition" (which I FINALLY got to see after a long wait)

I'm actually one of the few horror fans who isn't real excited about "Freddy Vs. Jason" even though I'm a big fan of both franchises...I'm more excited about "28 Days Later" and "May" which I didn't get to see but have heard great things about.

MiLo 06-18-2003 02:17 AM

The Freddy vs. Jason trailer teased me a bit, but i am expecting the worst, unfortunately. I dont go really go to the movies that much, but with this one i will make an exception.

Ive heard nothing but rave reviews about "28 Days Later", but i am a zombie freak.. i dont want to raise my hopes to high... it would be actually mind blowing if this movie would actually re-live the whole Zombie genre.
