Yeah I mean I didn't like breaking up, but it pissed me off even more because I had been around her young daughter all that time and was loving actually being fatherlike for her. That was the part I hated most because it made me think of when my parents got divorced and how I missed having a father around.

By the way I am single by both definitions and intend to stay that way.

Yeah you're reaching the point where you male senses have been beaten down and dulled to the point where you actually think you're enjoying things. One or two trips to a strip club will usually fix that. i recommend you start your therapy now.

anyway.... yeah, there's a few states that recognize common law.... but only after several years, and still... unless you're tied legally by that piece of paper, you're single. "Common law commited relationship" is not an option on your taxes.

Regardless... if you wanna look at having a girlfriend as not being single, great.... whatever works for ya. I can tell ya though, married and/or divorced people have a different outlook... married is not-single, anything else is single. :)

There are several states that recognize common law marriage in the US, on varying rationale. In some backwards Southern states, portraying yourself as husband and wife is enough (or used to be) to constitute common law... in others its time together, etc.

It's only messy at the breakup point...

see, but you look at it from a standpoint of "being with" someone.... I don't. That's the way teenagers look at relationships. Unless you're married or widowed... you're single. Doesn't matter who you happen to be with.

Look at it this way... if you got a girlfriend, and you go out of town somewhere. You hook up with someone and get freaky... doesn't matter if your girlfriend gets pissed off and leaves, there's no divorce to go through because you're single. How you feel about your relationship doesn't change the reality of it.
