Why can't the thumb preview idea be patented?

I mean the idea of thumb preview of galleries not the idea of thumb preview of the pictures inside galleries. I think it was a big improvement to adult sites and I am wondering why that idea is not patented.

jact 06-15-2003 05:30 PM

It is, all your previews are belong to us.

patent is for technology, not idea!

Anything can be patented these days, but you would likely spend more money trying to enforce it than you could make on it.

Then why is the text link patented? I believe it is owned by British telecom but has not been enforced.

Mr.Fiction 06-15-2003 06:04 PM

Also, the idea of thumb previews of galleries has been around for a long time in non-adult. When do you think it started?

Most photo gallery CGI scripts use a preview thumb as the icon for each gallery which they link to. That's what you're talking about, right?

blackmonsters 06-15-2003 06:11 PM

I'll help you get that patent after I finish with the one I'm working on now to patent the hand wave. People will have to pay me comming and going?:winkwink:

dchottie 06-15-2003 08:15 PM

I think i'll try to patent the idea of patents. Talk about getting paid coming and going. w00t w00t

No, you can't patent something like this and then come lord it over us and demand user fees from everyone. Sorry.

There's already a few retards trying this with movie downloads. The industry doesn't need any more patent-declaring assholes.

THe guy already had an auction site... or were they business partners, and one took off with the other's idea...?

That's not true. You can patent a business process such as online auctions, one-click sales, etc.

and what about the 30 min free trial?
what about the "reality show" concept..?
web search engines?
infomercials?
I can list a million of those...

juice 06-15-2003 08:43 PM

btw, you can also patent a research....

like the Atkins diet, or a business strategy that you would like to sell, etc...

here is a quote from the article on MSNBC.

MERCEXCHANGE FILED SUIT in federal court in September 2001 accusing eBay of using Woolston?s ideas to operate its online auction house, without his permission and without paying him.

stupid fucks.

fnet 06-16-2003 04:10 PM

supposedly they violated two patents, one was for fixed price auctions.

patents are handy for dealing with big fucking companies that want to mow your ass like grass, but they're basically the wrong idea.

waiting 70 years after the owner's (not the author, but whatever corporation or individuals buys the legal right to the patent) death was never the intention of copyright. in software it kills heuristic innovation outright.
