Cloaking 404 pages?

lets say you go to www.domain.com/zoo but it doesnt exist. Yet the 404 page you get, still says www.domain.com/zoo in the browser box

how is this done?

BJ 06-12-2003 02:09 AM

Really?

i had a feeling there was a way i can send my 404 to a page, and have the URL in the browser read the actual page they requested.

Im pretty sure i saw that somewhere, cant remember where, or if i even did, lol

There probably is but I'm too tired to think. Ask Harry Potter.

id rather ask that little Harmianee bitch (or whatever her name is) lol

if you edit the 404.shtml.en file on your server then all pages of the server will have the same 404 page and the URL will not change (this is probably only possible if you have a dedicated box). Then you can use htaccess to change specific domains' 404 pages if desired. But the htaccess will change the url.

This is just my experience, may be different in some cases.

no, your absolutely right ... but what you explained only redirects the 404, which i already have.

Lets say i have www.adult.com and someone types www.adult.com/lil2rich4u2

Well that url doesnt exist so it follows my .hta file.

BUT when you finally get to the 404 page, i want the URL to read www.adult.com/lil2rich4u2

I dont know if im explaining this correctly?

BJ 06-12-2003 02:31 AM

suggestion:

hire a team of consultants to worry about all this for you.

seriously

Machete_ 06-12-2003 02:31 AM

Teletubbies manages all my 404 pages

if you edit the 404.shtml.en file without using htaccess at all then you will get the desired effect in my experience. but once you use .htaccess in a certain directory.. i.e. /foo (which is foo.com's root dir on your server) then that dir and all sub dirs will use that .htaccess and ignore your 404.shtml.en ..but this will redirect to the url defined in your .htaccess file. SO... if you don't mind having the same 404 pages for all your domains then you won't need htaccess. But like i said, this will probably only work for dedicated boxes since your don't want to change the 404 of other hosting clients if the box is shared.

Ok i understand what you meant now, sorry.

However i am on a virtual, and i have to use a .hta file in each of my 200 or so domains, lol

I dont mind them all having the same 404, but id like to create the affect you explained.
