Sex Health Crisis In England!
Britain faces a crisis in sexual health, and clinics treating sexually transmitted diseases are being overwhelmed, according to MPs.
.... The report cites statistics showing: - one in ten sexually active young women in England is infected with chlamydia. If left untreated, this can lead to fertility problems in both men and women; - 42 per cent of women in England diagnosed with chlamydia are under the age of 20; - more than two-thirds of women and half of men who have chlamydia have no symptoms. - syphilis rates have increased by 500 per cent in the last six years; - gonorrhoea rates have doubled in the same period. - rates of teenage pregnancy are the highest in Europe. And figures for 2002 are expected to show 6,600 new diagnoses of HIV reported in the UK - a 26 per cent increase on the year before and the highest single increase since the epidemic began. The number of those infected by HIV through heterosexual encounters is increasing steadily. Since 1999, it has been greater than the number acquired through sex between men. But the MPs found clinics are turning "hundreds" of people away each week. Their report calls for: - a target of 48 hours for people who suspect they have caught a sexually transmitted disease to be able to see a doctor; - an urgent review of staffing levels at sex health clinics; - a chlamydia screening programme in England "immediately"; - sex and relationships to be made a compulsory part of the National Curriculum. http://www.channel5.co.uk/newsandwea...story186371 0 |
