You biggest risk ever?

7 years ago today I was on a plane to the UK with a one way ticket and a ton of luggage to meet a man I only knew online (but for a long time). I just had a feeling it would be okay.

What is the biggest risk you have taken?

2 questions:

A. you are talking 1996 here.. where and how did
you know the guy?

B. how did things work out afterwards?

Lets not confuse calculated risk taking with outright insanity :winkwink:

a. I met him on irc whilst I was still back in the States. I was going to uni in Boston and I happened to meet him on irc and we chatted - just chatted, not cybered - for a while and then I decided to go to London to try to do a work study thing but by the time I was going to go it was all about him. We talked for nearly 12 hours a day for 6 months.

B. We have been married 6 1/2 years

yeah, I know if I was using my head I wouldn't have done it but sometimes your heart needs to take over from your brain.

I usually only hear stories like this from russian mail order
brides so this is pretty amazing.

Consider yourself lucky and that goes for your husband as well :thumbsup

I agree with that. Congrats!

The biggest risk I ever took was also over a man. I left my comfortable Island to go with this guy to first L.A. then to Tennessee, and soon it's going to be on to Chicago.

I could well have lost everything and just been stranded someplace. But my heart told me to go....and I'm glad I did.

Vlad PL 06-11-2003 03:57 AM

yeah, I know. If I had my own daughter I would kill her if she did the same thing but double standards work sometimes, I guess. Thanks :)

You might be amazed by how many people meet online and end up getting married. It's prettycommon these days (a lot more common than it was in 1996), I think.

yeah, when we did it it was pretty rare - especially with the transatlantic thing. These days I don't really know many people that didn't meet their partner on the 'net. Such is my social circle, I guess.

Herb Kornfield 06-11-2003 05:24 AM

I met my wife at a party in July 1999.

Month later we decided to live together after a few dates ( 3 to be exact)

I went food shopping and realized, I had no idea what she liked to eat. I bought all kinds of meats and chicken figured, I'd make what I liked. She was a vegetarian at that time. We had a good laugh at that one. still do to this day.

2 months later, we got engaged

June 10th 2000 we got married and just celebrated our 3rd anniversary last night with a great night out on the town.

Just follow your heart, It can take you where your brain is afraid to let you explore. Throw the dice of life, you may just hit.....

No, I am implying that taking the chances that life sometimes drops on us can work out to be the best decision we made, can also be the worst, its all a crap shoot in life.

With any life decision that you make, there has to be some thought involved in the sense that if you can see as a rational person that the chance you took isnt working out, Then by all means, bail out of that suitation and do something else.

Just keep the mind open to the chances that you are presented is my overall idea here.....................

Paul Markham 06-11-2003 06:11 AM

I guess marrying Eva, knowing she would want children and that we were coming here to live (Czech)

I was planning to retire and go live on a beach in Thailand, so I think the not retiring is the biggest risk.

My younger brother, from England, was with us over the weekend. He's retired now and living off his pension in Herts and has no intentions of ever working again.

Do not envy him at all.

Bobby Fissure 06-11-2003 10:58 AM

I moved 3,000 miles to be with a girl I met on the internet. She dumped me a month later and I was homeless for some time.

Marcus 06-11-2003 11:01 AM

Hmmm I've never taken a risk, my life is boring.
I can't think of any cool risks to take

Congrats !!!:thumbsup :thumbsup I haven't done that but my mother did.. she met a guy on a chat program.. they talked for hours each day.. sometimes on the phone and a lot of emails (2 different countries)

they were thinking marriage but... at their age they decided against it (plus they've both been divorced... don't want that again :)) but the relationship is a bliss!!

Krusty 06-11-2003 12:01 PM

By unfortunate popularity it's supposed to be dangerous to meet people in person after only talking to them on the net.. well......... it's true to a point but it seems amazing that all of the personal experiences I've ever had with people on the internet has always been fantastic!

my man and I started knowing each other over the net after a brief encounter beforehand. we kept talking to each other non stop with msn msgr and email for ages.. i moved towns and now we're still together.

hey I did something similar. But he didn't know I was coming and I didn't even know what he looked like. Hooked up a surprise meeting through his friend, we had all met and chatted on aohell and the phone.

Talk about a gut feeling, six years later its more fun than ever.

looking back now it was rather insane hahaha

Yo Adrian 06-11-2003 02:55 PM

I flew to Copenhagen, Denmark by myself with NO money and NO place to stay.

I called my (ex)girlfriend, who had left and flown home 6 months earlier, on a payphone and told her I wanted to give it another chance between us.

It was late afternoon......if she hadn't have said yes I would have been homeless in a foreign country with no money to fly home..

:)

We've been married nearly 9 years now.

MetaformX 06-11-2003 03:18 PM

I took up daytrading during the stock market craze and lost $60,000. Then I quit my job and quit school and took up porn fulltime.
