US To Build Execution Chamber at Guantanamo Bay!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/americas/2979076.stm

Guantanamo death chamber planned

A court and execution chamber could be built at the US detention camp in Cuba under plans being drawn up by military officials.
Military tribunals for some of the hundreds of men detained at the US base on Guantanamo Bay moved a step closer last month with the appointment of a chief prosecutor and chief defence counsel.

Pentagon rules for the tribunals permit death sentences to be passed and the construction of a death chamber at the camp is among options being considered.

But defence officials stress that everything remains on the drawing board until orders are issued by the president.

"We have a number of plans that we work for short-term and long-term strategies but that's all they are - plans," camp commander Major-General Geoffrey Miller told the Associated Press news agency.

'Getting ready'

Renovation work such as rewiring has begun on a number of buildings which could later be designated as courts for the tribunals.

General Miller told AP there are also plans to build a permanent prison block for those convicted and sentenced and an execution chamber should any be sentenced to death.

"We're getting ready so we won't be starting from scratch," he said.

The detainees held at Camp Delta on the isolated US base include about 680 people captured during the war against the Taleban in Afghanistan, launched by the US after the 11 September 2001 attacks.

No charges

All have been classified as "enemy combatants" and as such are not entitled to legal representation or a civil trial.

None have yet been charged though cases are being prepared against 10 or more detainees.

After the detention centre opened in January 2002, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called its inmates "among the most dangerous, best trained, vicious killers on the face of the Earth".

But many are now thought to be low-level fighters.

Human rights groups have criticised both the makeshift conditions at the prison camp and the lack of rights afforded to the detainees.

I agree.

I prefer an old fashion method used in England in the 1500s, drowning in a vat of wine. That would piss a few Muslims off.

Why do we have to spend more money to build a chamber? It'd be so much easier to just take them out back and shoot em.

a death chamber is so much more cool.... especially if they put a big skull and crossbones, maybe with a black pirate eye patch.. on the front door...

I really don't mind the death penalty and all... but tipically when the US has gone to war... we tipically don't execute the soldiers of the losing side after the war is over... I mean did we do it with the Nazi's? wen't they worse than the Taliban? If we start executing prisoners that we don't even call POW's what will that do for our troops in the next war we fight?

The other side will have a great excuse to kill our POW's ... I don't belive these "detainies" should be let go.. but I do belive they should be given a fair Trial... if we don't then what have we become? we would be no better than the other rogue nations... Bush is sure draging our flag in the mud... I sure as hell hope this moron gets voted out of office...

It is not Taliban soldiers that will face military Tribunals...it is members of al Qieda...that will face military Tribunals...and members of terrorist organzations are not recognized as being POW's...as they are not soldiers.

Anti American ? becaudse I think Bush is a fuck twad that makes me anti American?

I love this country... but it is going down hill real fucking fast. If we do not give these prisoners the rights that any POW should get.. (no matter wtf they decide to call them "detainies" or what ever) then we are no better than any other 3rd world country that executes people with out fair trials.

The thing that makes this country great is our freedom and laws.. it seems they want to bend these laws to suit the current need.. You may not have to like the outcome, but our laws should be held up for anyone.. nomatter if it's you or a fucking terriost.. the law is the law.

What would you say if it was American soldiers sitting there being "detainies" and not given a legal trial... because they wern't classified as POW's...

Not sure you're right on that. Here are some people who'd be hard to convince, if we hadn't executed them after WWII:

"In 1946, the supreme commander of the American forces in Germany named the Landsberg prison as 'War Criminal Prison Nr. 1.' The prison housed 110 persons convicted during the Nuremberg trials, 1416 war criminals from the Dachau trials, and 18 from the Shanghai trials.

"As early as December 1945, the first prisoners were sent to the Landsberg prison. They were the war criminals sentenced to death at the Dachau trials for 'crimes against humanity'.

"Until 1951, there were 284 executions of war criminals at the Landsberg prison...." (source)

crockett 06-10-2003 08:21 PM

lol thanks for the corection.. I was thinking when I posted that, that someone would find some stuff from ww2 where we executed POW's.. ok well guess you can't arguee with history. :(

but it's still my opinion that we shouldn't execute these "detainies" .. especially not without a fair trial.. and I don't mean what ever way we can bend the rules to work in our favor.. I mean like any POW would and should get under the geniva convention.

with world opinion at an all time low for the US... I just don't think we should be pinning more targets on our backs.

Key words here are " convicted" & " trials". Those trials were conducted with the particip[ation of many nations and under the Geneva Convention. They were not conducted secretely like the ones the US wants to do...

The US is such a messenger of peace....

Terrorists are not recognized as being soldiers under the Geneva Convention thus are not POW's. The ones that will face a military tribunal are not soldiers...they are members of al Qieda...a terrorist organization.

yes that's how they are bending the laws... they know if they don't label them as soldiers .. they don't have to follow the rules.. is this really right though?

I'm not gunning for the tangos but just because they don't belong to a certin country's army... dosn't mean we shouldn't hold ourselfs to the basic rules of the Genevia Convention... I think we should prove ourselfs better than the rest and use our laws insted of bending them...

if not are we really any diffrent than some dictatorship?

I do not know what rules your are referring to that are being bent..maybe you can specify. Military Tribunals are legal and the defendants will have legal counsel present during trial.

The prisonners in Gantanamo Bay were taken from the battlefield in Afghanistan. They were following orders from their superiors as much a US soldier does the same.

It is not because they cannot afford fancy uniforms, helmets and hummers that they are not soldiers defending their country, rightfully or not...

Members of al Qaeda do not have a country to defend. Terrorists do not fight under the flag of a country and are not soldiers. Some of those that were being held turned out to be Taliban fighters and have been released...I suspect there will be more released.
