Justice Department cancels Pride event

SUMMARY: The office of U.S. Attorney General John Ashhahahahaha (news - web sites) notified gay employees in the Department of Justice (news - web sites) that they cannot hold their Pride event in department headquarters.

The office of U.S. Attorney General John Ashhahahahaha notified gay and lesbian employees in the Department of Justice on Thursday that they cannot hold their annual Pride event in the department's headquarters.

The move outraged GLBT political groups, who say the unprecedented move is discriminatory and violates a promise Ashhahahahaha made during his Senate confirmation hearings.

According to DOJ Pride, a group of hundreds of GLBT employees in the Justice Department (news - web sites), the Attorney General's Office cited a new, unwritten policy that allegedly prohibits any type of heritage month celebration unless it is supported by a White House proclamation. President Bush (news - web sites) has not officially recognized June as Gay Pride Month.

Patrick Guerriero, head of the Log Cabin Republicans (news - web sites), called the move a "step backward" and added that the new policy is an "extremely poor excuse."

"This is the first time we've heard of this policy," he told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network, "and the first time we've heard it applied to any federal agency."

The Web site for Federal GLOBE, a group of GLBT federal employees, lists Pride events that are scheduled for other agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (news - web sites) and the departments of Commerce and Transportation.

On Friday, U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., noted that he specifically asked Ashhahahahaha, during confirmation hearings more than two years ago, about the issue of DOJ Pride meeting in department facilities.

"The attorney general said that he had 'no intent to treat this group (DOJ Pride) differently than any other,'" Feingold said in a statement. "I call on the attorney general to uphold his direct promise to me not to discriminate against gay employees and reverse the department's decision to ban DOJ Pride from holding an event in the department's headquarters."

As of Friday afternoon, the Department of Justice has refused to comment on the situation.

Last June Ashhahahahaha's top deputy, Larry Thompson, spoke at the group's awards ceremony, held in the department's Great Hall. The attorney general came under fire from conservative groups for allowing the event.

DOJ Pride has been commemorating Pride month every year since 1997, either in the form of a ceremony or prominent display in department headquarters, according to the group's Web site. This year's event, scheduled for June 18, was an awards ceremony for two attorneys involved in two landmark GLBT cases this year.

"It's very troubling that the Justice Department, the agency responsible for protecting the civil rights of all Americans, would use its power to squelch the voices of its own gay and lesbian employees," said Winnie Stachelberg, political director of the nation's largest GLBT political group, the Human Rights Campaign. "What we're talking about here is the attorney general denying the right of a small group of employees to gather and listen to a speech."

Good.

If the they or anyone else for that matter want to have a fucking event, let them rent a fucking hall.

Not have it in a fucking federal, taxpayer funded building.

Then why just prohibit this gay event, and not the others??

Doesn't this sould like discrimination based on sexual orientation ?

A few more steps, and gays will crawl back in the closet scared of being butt fucked by the new Batman & Robin ( Bush - A-S-H...)...

The Truth Hurts 06-09-2003 09:22 PM

it should apply to everyone, which is basically what I said the first time.

cherrylula 06-09-2003 09:26 PM

would this really be a bad thing?
aren't you tired of hearing about everyones sexual preferences?
If you choose to suck cock, fine, I don't need to hear about it every 5 seconds.
If you choose to do things the natural way, fine also, I still don't want to hear about it.

every fucking minority group in this country has adopted this lame "look at me, i'm different" attitude that really needs to be dropped.

Also. doesn't holding a GAY pride event discriminate against the straight people?

tony286 06-10-2003 05:41 AM

Thats smart support the man who wants to put you in jail and throw away the key. lol

BRISK 06-10-2003 05:45 AM

Why are they wanting to hold the event in the offices?

Government offices are for working, not partying.

jollyperv 06-10-2003 05:48 AM

A-S-H-C-R-O-F-T molests collies.

basschick 06-10-2003 06:09 AM

when only one or two particular groups are excluded, it's bad news regardless of which groups they are. if other groups can use the office, be fucking fair.

Carrie 06-10-2003 10:32 AM

Hmm. Let me get this straight.
You can't hold a celebration of a holiday/event in a federal, tax-funded building unless it's a federally recognized holiday/event.

I don't see the fucking problem here. Maybe it's just because I'm not a whining bitch trying to force my opinions on everyone else who thinks that I'm entitled to whatever I choose to whine about today and that the entire nation of taxpayers should have to pay for me making a public display of my whining and proclamation of entitlement.
Hmm, ya think?

stevecore 06-10-2003 10:37 AM

it seems normal people are quickly becoming a minority, i say we petition to have our own month of pride.

No..you can't hold one if it's gay oriented...every other minority is allowed to do it within the walls of the justice department. They even hold regular prayer vigils.

cherrylula 06-10-2003 10:43 AM

and they all go to church on sunday to worship dead people.

I'd rather hear about someone sucking cock than god-talk.

they can shove their religion in our faces daily, just don't come out of the closet and be gay, cause its not officially recognized yet.

WWAD?

playa 06-10-2003 10:58 AM

lot of these government buildings have decorations on the walls and hold events all the time,

Scootermuze 06-10-2003 11:01 AM

My soul has never been 'redempted' before.. :)

banshman 06-10-2003 11:29 AM

I'm amazed at the level of political discourse at GFY. Y'all don't see the big picture. Republicans pander to the religious right the same way Democrats pander to minorities - a little bit of talk but no real actions.

For instance, you are crazy if you think there is a Republican agenda to outlaw porn - that would completely piss off at least half of the voting public. Instead they will do a little talking, let the liberal media overeact, and the republicans wind up smelling like roses to the religious right. Nothing of consequence will be done.

Just like the Democrats have no real agenda to truly promote gay or black rights. They'll talk up a storm, but what did Bill Clinton or the dems do during the 8 Clinton years? "Don't Ask Don't Tell" was a pretty minor thing, but gay groups act as though Dems are doing everything they can for them.

Truth be told, there are only small degrees separating the two parties. If someone thinks that covering up the tits on a statue from tv cameras is proof that the AG is a zealot, they are a gullible fool who believes exactly what the right AND left-wing media want you to believe.

How 'bout the fact he wouldn't allow dancing inside the governors mansion when he was governor of Missouri because his religion forbids it as "sexually suggestive."?

for those of you interested..here's our singing attorney general...this is real...lol:

What I have a hard time to understand is how the AG of the mighty USA has time to spare to look into such an event...

If he does so, it is because of his moral and religious beliefs, that you will have the chance to sample soon...

I prefer the way up north of you guys:

Toronto Issues Gay Marriage Licenses After Ruling
1 hour, 7 minutes ago

By Jeffrey Hodgson and Randall Palmer

TORONTO/OTTAWA (Reuters) - The city of Toronto started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples on Tuesday after an Ontario provincial court issued a landmark ruling setting aside the heterosexual definition of marriage.

If the ruling is not appealed, the province of Ontario would be the first jurisdiction in North America to legalize gay marriage. Vermont and Quebec have allowed gay civil unions but not full marriage.

And the point is NOT about being gay or not, or being fat or not, and so on: it is about having different laws for different people or orientation.

and FYI, I am not gay... if I was, I would be much more pissed.

Gov't Changes Mind on Gay Employee Event

WASHINGTON - Attorney General John Ashhahahahaha will allow gay and lesbian Justice Department employees to hold an annual gathering at agency headquarters if they foot the bill, a move critics said Tuesday was a clumsy reversal of a previous decision.

Officials with the group DOJ Pride said last week that they were told the awards ceremony could not be held in the agency's Great Hall next Wednesday.

But agency spokesman Mark Corallo said the intention was not to block the group from holding the event, only to make it clear it would not be officially sponsored by the department. That means the group's members must pay any costs themselves.

"They will not be officially sponsored this year, just like every other group," Corallo said. "They took that to mean they couldn't have the event."

Making a fundamentalist christian the Attorney General is "no real action" ?

Stopping federal stem cell research because religious crackposts believe a blastocyst is a person is no real action?

You should see the variety of fundamentalist kooks Bush has been sending to UN family planning commissions to oppose contraception, abortion, and any family planning but the rhythm method.

Ah, that explains it. You obviously aren't old enough to remember the Reagan/Bush years.

Isn't it past your bedtime?

Let me introduce you to the English language: "redempted"? No, "redeemed." I think you are confusing redempted with exempted or preempted or something.

Hmmm ... I will agree that you are not trying to force your opinions on anyone, at least.

Once again the bigots and bobble-heads for Bush are going to look the other way as Ashhahahahaha knuckles under to pressure from Falwell, Robertson, et al. and breaks the word he gave the Senator in his confirmation hearings. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out how shrill the screaches would be if it was Janet Reno banning an NRA event.

MegaPussy 06-11-2003 09:25 AM

Didn't we have a national day/hour/few minutes of prayer this year in the US? Maybe I'm mis-remembering.

And I believe we cut all funding for the UN family planning program, or those aspects of it which advocate birth control. He did that right after taking office.

I'm perplexed....

Désolé, mais ma langue maternelle n'est pas l'anglais, ni d'ailleurs l'américain.

Se tromper sur un mot ne requiert pas une "introduction" a la langue en question.

Obviously, you are a very narrow minded person.

So now you can go fuck yourself
