Topic: Boiling eggs.

Ok, this fucking bothers the shit out of me.

When you boil eggs ~ how do you proceed?

I have always, my entire life, pierced a little hole with a pin or needle into the round end of the egg, to prevent it from bursting when I dump it in hot water.

Now I get to hear that nobody else does it.... :eek2

I am mildly confused. :(

X37375787 06-09-2003 06:02 PM

See, no matter how hot the water is, the egg never bursts that way. The air inside the egg gets released, but nothing else comes out.

Juicy D. Links 06-09-2003 06:03 PM

hole? huh who told you that?

X37375787 06-09-2003 06:04 PM

It's an old trick my mom taught me about 20 years ago.

Can't believe nobody else does this.

ldinternet 06-09-2003 06:05 PM

Verdict: fucked up habit that you're too stubborn to change

machineg 06-09-2003 06:06 PM

start in cold water .. cook 4 minutes past boiling

cherrylula 06-09-2003 06:06 PM

hard boiled eggs?

the trick is to start them out in cold water and keep the flame mediumish til it boils, then turn it off and let them sit..... and after about ten minutes or so gradually fill the pan up with cold water in the sink and leave them there to cool.

pimplink 06-09-2003 06:06 PM

I boil '1000 year old eggs'...does that count? :winkwink: :thumbsup

ldinternet 06-09-2003 06:07 PM

I always start with cold water, no pinprick.

But... http://www.tipking.com/Tips/publish/tip_278.shtml

cherrylula 06-09-2003 06:07 PM

time to turn sigs off again

:waaaaahh

X37375787 06-09-2003 06:07 PM

I also always shock my eggs after boiling with ice cold water to make them peel easier.

Am I a nutcase?

madps 06-09-2003 06:08 PM

Normal people run them under cold water so they don't burn their hands when peeling them...

Gutterboy 06-09-2003 06:10 PM

Egg shells are porous, no need to make a hole in them.

cherrylula 06-09-2003 06:16 PM

I'd teach you to cook but you'd also have to learn to wash dishes ;)

Lane 06-09-2003 06:44 PM

simple, don't put them in the boiling water.. boil them in the water and they won't explode on you

and yea, the cold water after done is good for peeling

My ex-wife knew of a "wet nurse" (basically a lactating nanny who could breast feed your baby) who stuffed ice cubes in her bra so that her milk wouldn't spoil. She and your mom should get together. :1orglaugh

Seriously, I have seen eggs break when dropped in boiling water, but who knows whether it was because they cracked when they hit the bottom of the pot or because of the sudden temperature change.

When I boil eggs, I start out with cold water and let the eggs come to boiling with the water.

How do other people do it?

freeadultcontent 06-09-2003 06:49 PM

A small hole in the small end is fine and makes the peel easier.

So does a pinch of salt added to the water and also plunging them into cold water when done.

Start eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, turn down to simmer or low for 10 minutes, then let sit for 5 more. Plunge in cold water.

High heat fucks with the eggs making them kinda tough, slow heat is always best.

GeorgeTH 06-09-2003 06:54 PM

Now - I'm German too, and yes: already as a child I learned to make a little hole into the bottom of the egg (where the air bubble sits) - works well!

If you start with eggs in cold water you can do it without (and be lucky 90% of the time), but I find it hard to time them correctly (specially if not at home! Unknown stove: faster or slower heating, etc.)

Finally: when you buy one of these excellent egg boiling appliances they all come with a pin in the bottom of the measuring cup - why would they put it there if it's only good to cut your fingers on? Answer: to make a little hole into the bottom of your egg so it doesn't crack during boiling!!!

And if you don't shock boiled eggs under cold water they are a nightmare to peel - specially if you let them go cold...
