checks coming from bank of montreal

yesterday I went to a bank to deposit some checks . The bank employee told me that I had to pay about $15-16 for every check coming from bank of montreal. The thing is that it was 1st time I went to the bank to do this task, I always had someone else doing it. Is this normal? I don't see why only the specific bank has such fee and what's the logic behind it?

What bank are you doing biz with?

Asuna with a european one, I'm not in Canada. I know it's not the first time we deposit checks from this specific bank. We have a friend working there and he takes care of deposits etc
This time he wasn't there and the employee couldn't even deduct the # of 6 checks (6x$15 or so) from the deposits and requested me to pay the amount. Maybe our friend was able to automatically deduct the fee. No big deal, but it's a bit strange that they have a flat fee for every check. I don't know if anyother bank does the same. First time I'm noticing it.

did they tell you it was specifically for Bank of Montreal checks? it might be for all canadian checks but your friend doesn't charge you.
