business licenses?

I had a horrible experience with the City of Sacramento today, trying to apply for a business license at my new location. Basically I had to explain my "business functions" to the female clerk at the Tax division... to which I said "We do adult media production", thinking that was enough of an explanation. She wanted to know more. So I tell her "we do video and phtography of an adult nature and websites with an affiliate program". She continues to look at me as if she's completely stunned, and says "I'll have to go clear this with my supervisor... I don't think we'll be able to do this".

UHHHH, since when is adult entertainment illegal?? This completely pissed me off. So now they have to submit the application to the Planning Department, and god only knows who else... WHAT THE FUCK!!!! I never had to deal with this shit when I applied for the license in Placer County. Even though this is a VERY conservative county... it just zipped right through, no problem. The clerk even had a smile on her face.

But not this time around. What do you guys think is going on here?? I tried to explain to her that this business is NOT open to the public, it's not like I have some neon sign hanging outside my door that says "XXX Porn Productions, ENTER HERE". The public would never even know about it, considering it's in a very secluded warehouse in a low-traffic part of town... with no sign. This ain't a fucking strip club by any means either. She said she doesn't care what I say about it, "as long as it's an adult business we have to pass it on for review"... fucking bullshit.

Anyway, do you think I should just cancel the application and go in and apply next week as a "photographer"?

Yeah that was fucked up. I'm trying to figure out who's agenda I'm getting fucked by... the clerk's or the City's. As far as I know, there's no reason why the city wouldn't let me operate just like a normal business.

Almost all cities have laws regarding adult businesses. Cancel the application and re-file it as "photography."

Yeah, I'd let that application die. You really should have a lawyer handling that to avoid complications later.

That's what I'm thinking. I just don't want that bitch-ass-whore to recognize me as the "adult" guy and try to fuck me over a second time when she realizes I'm applying under a different business function.

Just wait a couple weeks and have your lawyer file it or something like that. You might even be able to get the forms and do it all by mail, it depends on your city.

I think I would have started by asking if they even require a license for a service business. Some states don't require a license if you aren't selling anything that you collect taxes on.
