The Matrix is NOT an original movie

It is a copy of a movie called "Dark City" which was released in 1998, a year before the Matrix). I found this link with a comparison.

I own DarkCity.
Matrix and DarkCity have NOTHING in common.

andi_germany 06-06-2003 02:05 AM

I have seen both Dark City and The Matrix. I would not say that Dark City is a movie the matrix is based on. Both movies have a totally different feel to it. By the way the producers never said that the story was new but the techniques to film it were unique and new.

bhutocracy 06-06-2003 02:06 AM

thats really lame - um.. both are dark futuristic movies of course they share a bunch of the same cliches. some of those comparisons were so fucking lame. i saw dark city when it came out - it was great - knowing the context in some of those pictures it 's pretty trumped up.
the premise was kinda the same in both of them - if you were aware at the time they came out there were comparisons.. aside from that, if you think matrix could have ripped off the first film and got it through the arcane studio process and into completion a mere year later you're fucking crazy.

but yeah - dark city, great movie, rent it out.. i didn't think of it once watching matrix the first time.

im not saying they didn't get cues from dark city, but they did it well enough to seperate themselves.. I don't mind "inspiration" as long as the end product is better.

Mr.Fiction 06-06-2003 02:16 AM

Starwars is a ripoff of Lord of the Rings.

RedShoe 06-06-2003 02:27 AM

Andrew Mason produced both movies.

And Michelle McGahey did the Art Production for both films (HUGE REASON WHY THEY HAVE A SIMILAR LOOK)

Rick Connelly, Kathy Courtney, Wendy Sainsbury, Sonja Smuk, and Elka Wardega all worked the make-up department together, on both films.

Carol Hughes, and Will Mathews were both production managers ON BOTH MOVIES!

Bruce Hunt, and James McTeigue were BOTH 2nd unit directors on both films.

Rodney Burke, Ray Fowler, David Pride, Arthur Spink Jr., Edwin Treasure, Thomas Van Koeverden, Walter Van Veenendaal, and David Young, did Special Effects FOR BOTH FILMS

Jane Maguire, Jon Thum... and many, many more did computer FX for both films.

Now do you see why two films that are nothing alike can look the same?

Any more stupid accusations?

Mr.Fiction 06-06-2003 02:28 AM

Avril Lavigne is almost exactly like the Sex Pistols too.

Oh dear lord ... DUH! and NO! all in the same sentence. Neither one is original. The concept of them both (plus 13th Floor, and a handful of others) are all based on concepts done before. Universal Unconscience is not a new concept...

The fact is that The Matrix, Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor are all excellent films and should be judged on their own merit and interpretation of this concept.

And, even funnier, The Matrix was filmed in the same studio as Dark City, right after Dark City was filmed... to cut on the budget, they used much of the sets from Dark City.

Gasper 06-06-2003 05:13 AM

Wtf?? This guy is showing scenes from matrix 1 - 1994! Am I the only one who noticed that? :glugglug

Both very cool movies. I love how flicks released about the same time tend to take on the same general theme...even if it's artificial, it makes me feel better about myself and my pathetic, so-called life...as if there is something bigger out there, something more important...

Dark City rocks; really glad I got to see it in the theater, as it doesn't hold up as well on the small screen as The Matrix, IMO. Storywise it's more intriguing, but...oh, heck, blah blah blah blah blah.

Yeah I love that movie. Very good. Not too much chit chat like a lot of these movies lately.

The mood of Dark City is absolutely fantastically dreary. Thumbs up. :thumbsup

Here is the real original movie matrix is based on. Forget that

Months after it came out Gibson got dragged to see it and loved the movie. Before he was worried that it might be ripping on his work but he saw that it really was original and well done so there you have it. He wrote the afterword for "The Art of The Matrix" He even went so far as to say Neo is his favorite Sci Fi hero.

We've heard this 500 times before. Stfu already. We know Dark City did something *barely* related to The Matrix.

And for that matter, dark city blew hairy goats' balls. It was the most tedious, unmoving load of crap.

The Matrix rocks =) Face it.

The Truth Hurts 06-06-2003 09:20 AM

what about "Thirteenth Floor"?

another good flick along the same line of thought.

Brujah 06-06-2003 05:27 PM

Exactly. The 13th Floor was based on a book called Simulacrum 3... the matrix is just a ripoff of that filled with mind-numbing psuedo philosophical jargon and crazy special effects.
